History

The chief of detectives for a major city’s police department, Mahoney found the murdered body of racketeer Tony Scarlatti based on a frantic phone call from the dying man. He reported this to Commissioner Reagan, who exploded at him about the phone call, claiming Scarlatti had identified his killer as Nick Pinto, Scarlatti’s late predecessor. Mahoney was ordered to drop the Pinto angle on the murder and to find a real suspect.

Scarlatti’s murder was shortly followed by a crime wave that ended when Captain America and Bucky tracked down and rounded up the gang, which included the still-alive Nick Pinto. Mahoney attempted to sweat a confession on how Pinto escaped death while interrogating him, but the toughened gangster refused to tell Mahoney anything.[1]
