History

Maia was a nymph and the eldest daughter of sea nymph Pleione and Titan Atlas. She was followed by her sisters Alcyone, Electra, Celaeno, Sterope, Merope, and Taygete, forming together the Pleiades.

Mating with Zeus, she gave birth to Hermes.

She raised him, although due to his speed, she was unable to see that he sometimes left her side to steal the cattle of his half-brother Apollo.
