History
Origin[]
Mammon was an angel of Heaven was among the (cited by unconfirmed sources) fallen angels (whose fate was stated to be unrevealed),[1] and a Demon from Hell.[2][3]
An ancient sentient entity, possibly Mammon itself, was trapped under the Earth's crust[3] beneath the Gulf of Mexico, five miles off the coast of Galveston, Texas,[4] for millions of years.[3]
Modern era[]
In the Peat Bogs of the Northern Jutlands, in Denmark, Mother Feere of Bog People once invoked Belial, Satan and Mammon to restore life into the Bog Men, only to be stroke down by those demons.[2]
One of Roxxon's rigs, deeper than anyone had ever gone before, eventually find it, under the form of a new type of energy, a self-sustaining energy source. CEO David Walsh decided to acquire it, and the drilling cause an explosion killing eighteen Roxxon employees.[3]
The entity was named "Mammon" at one point by someone, as a reference to the demon, as if Roxxon had breached the bowels of Hell itself (a Roxxon scientist later though maybe they indeed did that). Trying to contain it, they tried science, including a magnetic field, and eventually used humans as vessel to sustain it. Walsh decided to acquire people from the Mexican Cartels as test subjects after it first invested the body of one of the workers, Bob Kyle. Mammon burned those vessels faster and faster, adapting, like it was "waking up".[3]
The Spirit of Mammon was a spirit that Doctor Strange had to regularly bind, many times over the course of the year.[5]
was bound into a bronze statue of a bull in New York City. When Strange was murdered, the Spirit was unbound and the bronze roamed in the streets, opposed by Spider-Man (Ben Reilly) and Black Cat, tasked to deal with Strange's loose ends.[6] During his yearly parley with Dormammu, Strange had once again to bind the Spirit of Mammon.[5] The relation, if any, between Mammon and the Spirit is unknown.Attributes

Notes
- Despite hints, it is unclear if "Mammon" awaken by in Scarlet Spider (Vol. 2) #9 is truly the Demon featured in Zombie #1 (and if he is indeed the Fallen Angel referenced in the Angels' profile of the Marvel Zombies: The Book of Angels, Demons & Various Monstrosities #1).
- Nothing was revealed about the Spirit of Mammon seen in Death of Doctor Strange: Spider-Man #1 and Doctor Strange (Vol. 6) #3.
- "Mammon" was considered "too alien" by Fifty-One, the alien member of the Rangers.[3]
