Synopsis for "Hellfire and Brimstone"

Daken is investigating a tip he received about a mutant mass grave near one of the outlets from Morlock Alley in Greenwich (Connecticut). He digs in the area and uncovers mutant remains. Immediately after Akihiro sends out a “memory flare” for one of the Krakoan telepaths to pick up, the ground begins to violently shake. Daken is suddenly engulfed in fire, which quickly extinguishes and encases him in molten rock. Akihiro weakly reaches out telepathically to warn of the trap before passing out from his injuries. An unseen figure approaches and tells someone to “prepare the Theater”.

Kate Pryde and Bishop discuss the future of the Marauders over the wreckage of their ship docked at Hellfire Bay. Kate says she wants to gather new members and become more active in mutant rescue moving forward. Kate and Bishop recruit Psylocke and Tempo, respectively, but when Kate and Kwannon go to the Boneyard to enlist Daken, they find him missing. Kate tells Psylocke they’ve got their first mission. Bishop and Tempo find Aurora in Calgary after she rescues a hostage mutant. They ask for her help locating Akihiro. Aurora suggests that if they’re talking to Daken’s lovers, they should bring Somnus in on the search as well. Kate and Aurora find Somnus in the Broken Baths guiding Iceman and Christian Frost through a dream and ask for his help. Carl is eager to join.

On the abandoned grounds of the Xavier School, Daken is restrained in an X-shaped stockade in front of a rabid crowd of both humans and mutants. Daken yells at the crowd as they pelt him with blunt and sharp objects alike, until the leader of the mob, the horned and armored Brimstone Love, uses his pyrokinetic power to sear the flesh around Akihiro’s mouth. Love welcomes Daken to his Theater of Pain and preaches that Charles Xavier abandoned his dream of mutant-human coexistence when he established Krakoa. Love says that he and his followers believed in that dream and are enraged at Xavier’s betrayal, and that they will take out their rage on Daken, who can endure pain forever but never die.

The Marauders - minus Captain Pryde - arrive at the mass grave site in Greenwich. While Psylocke and Tempo work together to get a clear psychic impression of where Daken was taken, Bishop reviews Akihiro’s report on the tip he received. Bishop notes that Carver, the former Morlock who contacted Daken, is also missing. Psylocke tells Bishop she has a location.

Carver, at the front of the mob, gleefully joins in Daken’s torture, telling him Krakoa won’t ever be for mutants like Carver. Brimstone Love says his Theater of Pain will provide validation and an outlet for those who don’t believe in Krakoa. Daken says he knows Love is somehow manipulating the crowd, but Love proceeds to slit Akihiro’s throat with a razor. Before he can inflict more damage, the Marauders arrive in their new vessel.

Kate and Bishop confront Brimstone Love while the rest of the team handles the mob. Love and Carver rage about the exclusivity of Krakoa while the crowd attacks the Marauders. Aurora is able to subdue the Morlock in a flash of light and Daken, in a berserker rage, frees himself and slashes off one of Brimstone Love’s horns. Furious, Love uses his powers to create a sinkhole that nearly swallows the Marauders and the crowd of Love’s supporters and also allows him to escape.

In an intercepted communication, Brimstone Love tells an unknown backer of his that his Theater of Pain will continue.

After christening the Marauder II with her new team, Kate meets with Emma Frost and Sebastian Shaw. To Shaw’s displeasure, she appoints Christian Frost as Red Monarch to serve as proxy for her and Bishop’s Hellfire Trading Company duties. Emma then hands Kate a puzzle box made of mysterium that Emma claims is two billion years old. The box is inscribed with Kate’s name in Krakoan. Inside is a map of Krakoa, with “The first blood spilled” written in Kate’s handwriting at the top of the page.
