History

Hyperion was a construct created by the demon Mephisto[1] and programmed by the Power Elite in cooperation with a recently-revived Agent Coulson to be a member of the Squadron Supreme of America, a superhero team sponsored by the U.S. Government. But secretly to further Coulson and Mephisto's schemes.[2][3]

During his personal time, Mark was an American history teacher at Buscema High School in Kensington, Maryland.[2]

Fighting Namor

Hyperion and his team were brought in to meet General Ross in order to be the U.S.'s response to the now-unaligned Avengers.[4] The Squadron Supreme was later put to the test against King Namor and his Defenders of the Deep, countering several attacks against Roxxon in American waters.[5][6]

After the death of General Ross,[7] he was seen being conditioned and made to repeat things like how he came from far away, was raised by farmers and had the strength of an Eternal, small-town values and will fight for America. Coulson also had it designed that he was in a relationship with fellow teammate Power Princess, who was there with him, and had her conditioned from loving Hyperion to lusting for him. His teammate and know the one in charge Col. Joseph Ledger aka Doctor Spectrum was shown what was being done by Coulson. Seeing this as torturing fellow citizens he became angry and wanted it all shut down. But Coulson uttered a trigger phrase putting him under control, revealing what he was doing to Hyperon and the others he was also doing to Ledger.[2]

Mark was teaching at school when a group of Frost Giants from Jotunheim invaded Washington on behalf of Malekith the Accursed during his War of the Realms. As Hyperion, Milton met up with the rest of the Squadron. They killed some of the Frost Giants and routed the remaining invaders to the Canadian frontier in Lake Erie. Coulson subsequently dispatched the team to Ohio.[2]

When the cosmic force known as the Phoenix Force returned to Earth, it staged a contest to determine its next host, and Hyperion was one of many individuals summoned to the White Hot Room for it. The Phoenix empowered the assembled champions and had them fight each other in trials by combat.[8] Hyperion's first fight saw him pitted against Shang-Chi. However, when Milton started becoming attuned to the Phoenix's power boost, he noticed his enhanced senses expanding to infinity, allowing him to sense life across the cosmos. Hyperion became overwhelmed when he realized expanding his mind would make him more open-minded, and he yielded.[9]

Coulson attempted to warp reality using the Pandemonium Cube provided by Mephisto,[3] creating Earth-21798, where the Avengers never existed and the Squadron Supreme were the world's premiere superhero team.[10] Reality was eventually restored by Blade the Vampire Hunter and his team of Avengers. So, Mephisto punished Coulson by trapping him in the Pandemonium Cube. Without Coulson, the Squadron Supreme fell apart. When reality returned to normal, Hyperion possessed his Earth-21798 counterpart's memories, leaving him confused about the whole experience and flew off to Russia in hopes no one would think to look for him.[3][11]

Later, while in Western Russia's Ural Mountains he was seen with Red Widow. He had gone to her for help free him from what Coulson, the Power Elite and Mephisto had done to him. While he was inside her machine and hooked up, she was seen using Red Room brainwashing techniques to break down and undo the conditioning that was done to him when the remnants of the Squadron Supreme of America came for him. With Doctor Spectrum looking to arrest Red Widow for what she was doing to his teammate, it looked like they were there to save Hyperion. That is until Power Princess killed Doctor Spectrum and took his Power Prism for herself. Hyperion could do nothing but listen as Power Princess and Blur learned that Red Widow was only trying to help him, and to his horror she would allow Red Widow's work to continue but seemingly for her own ends.[11]
