Synopsis

The Guardians of the Galaxy go to Drax's homeworld (against Drax's wishes) so they can activate a beacon that summons Adam Warlock, hoping he can help them stop J'Son. The beacon lies within the Temple of the Destroyer, which only Drax, as the Destroyer, can enter. However, they are attacked by Xeron, who became the Destroyer after Drax abandoned his position to start a family. Once the Guardians force her to stand down, Xeron explains that the purpose of the Destroyer is to summon Warlock with the beacon and then destroy him. Drax and Xeron fight to see which of them is the true Destroyer and has the right to enter the temple, but the temple opens for both of them during the fight. The Guardians quietly follow them into the temple. The Sphinx, the temple's automated guardian, poses the two Destroyers with a series of riddles to prove their worth. Drax and Xeron struggle with the Sphinx's tests, and Xeron's impulsive attitude activates many of the temple's defenses. Although Star-Lord helps him solve the riddles at first, Drax eventually realizes the tests are trying to push him and Xeron into working together. With the Guardians' help, the Destroyers take Warlock's beacon from the Sphinx's mechanical body. Xeron uses the beacon to bring Adam Warlock to the planet. The temple begins to collapse when Adam Warlock tries in vain to use his immense powers to free himself from the beacon. Xeron, trapped under rubble, begs Drax to fulfill his destiny and slay Warlock. He frees Warlock instead, and Warlock uses his powers to save Xeron and the Guardians of the Galaxy from falling rubble. Xeron and Drax work together to make the temple's entrance open again so they can all get out in time. The Guardians leave with Warlock to prepare to take on J'Son, leaving Xeron behind to ponder the true purpose of the Destroyer. As they fly away, Drax tries to understand metaphor by writing a song, but Rocket destroys his guitar before he can sing the other 59 verses.
