Synopsis
While training on his ship, Nova is alerted to an incursion from the Negative Zone by Annihilus and his armada, the Annihilation Wave. Arriving on Earth, Nova finds New York City under attack and joins forces with Spider-Man to rescue the Beetle, who is mistaken for a rogue drone while committing a bank robbery and taken over by a parasite. Meanwhile, A.I.M. partners with the Annihilation Wave and hires Taskmaster to free the recently-captured M.O.D.O.K. from the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier. Captain America and Iron Man are able to repel A.I.M.'s assault and defeat Taskmaster, who refuses to join forces with them even when Iron Man offers to put him on Tony Stark's payroll. Taskmaster retreats, but warns the heroes that the Savage Land is being attacked.
Professor X senses strange activity at the old Sentinel factory in Genosha and sends Wolverine and Storm to investigate. There they find that the Master Mold has been reactivated and reprogrammed to serve Annihilus, producing Sentinels piloted by Control Bugs. Freeing captured mutants, Wolverine and Storm destroy the Master Mold and are informed by Professor X that the Sentinels are spreading around the world and even going into space, with a large number going to the Savage Land. In the Savage Land, Ka-Zar informs She-Hulk and Storm that mutants he'd rescued had been abducted by the Annihilation Wave's forces. Storm deduces this to be the work of Sauron, who allied with the Annihilation Wave in exchange for mutants to feed on. Fighting their way through the Arthrosian swarm and hijacked Sentinels, She-Hulk and Storm defeat Sauron and return him to his human form, leaving him in the care of Ka-Zar.
In Wakanda, Klaw allies with the Annihilation Wave and attacks the capital, Birnin Zana, in order to steal its Vibranium. However, the Black Panther and Captain America are able to stop him. Princess Shuri traces the flight path of the Annihilation Wave's invasion pods and determines they are coming from the Moon. Wolverine, Nova, and Phoenix arrive at the Blue Area of the Moon, finding Uatu's citadel under attack by the Annihilation Wave. Scouting ahead, Jean is parasitized by a Control Bug and draws too deeply on the power of the Phoenix Force to free herself, succumbing to the cosmic firebird's destructive impulses and becoming the Dark Phoenix. After Jean is brought to her senses, Uatu provides the heroes with Lockjaw as a means of transportation.
With Lockjaw's help, Spider-Man and She-Hulk arrive to Lady Hellbender's ship, the Destromundo, finding it under attack by the Annihilation Wave's forces. Fighting their way through Lady Hellbender's menagerie into the bowls of the ship, they are attacked by a berserk Venom, whose symbiote had been spawning corrupted offshoots. Talked into joining forces with the heroes, Venom senses an even greater threat looming and takes the Black Panther to Klyntar, where A.I.M. has accidentally awakened the primordial god of darkness Knull. Routing A.I.M., Venom and the Black Panther are able to stall Knull long enough for him to be re-sealed, though the dark god swears revenge.
Contacted by Lady Sif, Phoenix and Beta Ray Bill journey to Asgard to find it under attack by the Annihilation Wave, a brainwashed Galactus, and the goddess of death Hela, who joined forces with them in order to swell the ranks of her undead armies. The heroes are able to defeat Hela but fail to prevent Galactus from consuming Asgard, though Sif manages to save a seed of Yggdrasill so that the World Tree can be planted anew.
Arriving on the Kree homeworld Hala to find it under attack by the Annihilation Wave, Captain America and Rocket Raccoon stop the Arthrosians from seizing the Supreme Intelligence and free Phyla-Vell from a Control Bug. Hearing maniacal laughter over his comms, Rocket realizes that Thanos is responsible. Nova and Phyla-Vell assault Thanos' ship, the Sanctuary II, where the Mad Titan reveals he facilitated Annihilus' invasion as one of his schemes to wipe out all life in the universe. With Thanos defeated, Beta Ray Bill and Cosmic Ghost Rider free the Silver Surfer from the Control Bugs infesting him, and he in turn frees Galactus. Travelling to the Negative Zone, Nova and Phyla-Vell assault the Annihilation Wave's breeding facility, Heteropteron, defeating Annihilus' three queens Extirpia, Eradica, and Exermina. With Galactus' help, the Silver Surfer and Rocket breech Annihilus' citadel, but the warlord leaves them to fight M.O.D.O.K. and departs to destroy Earth. As a boon for freeing him, Galactus takes the heroes back to Earth, where they defeat Annihilus and leave him at the mercy of a furious Devourer of Worlds.
With the Annihilation Wave thwarted, the heroes begin recuperating and rebuilding, Uatu confident that they will be ready for whatever comes next.Cast
