Synopsis for "Marvel Graphic Novel Vol 18 ‘The Sensational She Hulk’"

During a night out on the town with her boyfriend Wyatt Wingfoot, She-Hulk is captured by S.H.I.E.L.D. agents using Mandroid Armor to make sure she won't become the type of menace as her more famous and violent cousin.

The pair are taken to the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, where She-Hulk is subjected to a humiliating strip search, ordered by Agent Dooley. Under threat to Wyatt Wingfoot’s life, She-Hulk is forced to disrobe completely in full view of a group of male agents. The degrading act is interrupted by senior agent Dum Dum Dugan, who berates Dooley for violating protocol—strip searches, he angrily notes, are to be conducted in private and only by agents of the same sex. Dugan orders She-Hulk be issued a smock and temporarily takes control of the situation, offering an apology for the mistreatment. However, Dugan is soon usurped by Dooley, who uses his political connections within S.H.I.E.L.D. to have Dugan abruptly reassigned, leaving Dooley in command of the operation.

With Dugan removed, Dooley escalates the abuse of authority by ordering She-Hulk to undergo a prolonged and invasive medical examination, conducted by S.H.I.E.L.D. technician Sidney Levine (Gaffer). Once again, She-Hulk is forced to strip, this time inside a high-tech medical lab, and is restrained and studied for hours while Gaffer carries out the procedure under Dooley’s supervision. When she is finally returned to her cell—unconscious, and again dressed only in the ill-fitting smock—Wyatt is horrified at her condition. Despite the ordeal, She-Hulk eventually regains her strength. The two are imprisoned in a pressure cell designed to contain her She-Hulk form, but S.H.I.E.L.D. underestimates her ability to transform into her much smaller human identity, Jennifer Walters. By shifting back into Walters and slipping through the cell bars while Wyatt maintains the pressure plate weight, she escapes captivity and begins seeking a way off the Helicarrier.

S.H.I.E.L.D.'s plan continues to go wrong when the Helicarrier is menaced by a horde of sentient roaches that are able to take over the bodies of human hosts. The Helicarrier goes down in the mayhem and in keeping the whole thing from blowing sky high, She-Hulk is exposed to a heavy dose of radiation that prevents her from changing into her alter-ego Jennifer Walters ever again.

Notes

  • S.H.I.E.L.D. General Order 0957 ostensibly allows Agent Dooley to strip search She-Hulk, but it's intended to be performed in a private cell by an agent of the same sex.
  • The examination of She-Hulk begins at 9:47 PM, as stated by Dooley, and concludes at 3:17 AM, as indicated by the clock on the cell wall—an ordeal lasting approximately five and a half hours, during which She-Hulk remains completely nude throughout the procedure.
  • The examination is conducted by Sidney Levine, better known as “Gaffer,” despite his expertise lying primarily in S.H.I.E.L.D.’s special weapons division. His involvement in the procedure is less by choice and more by coercion, pressured into compliance by Agent Dooley. Throughout the examination, Dooley looms nearby, overseeing every invasive detail—not out of scientific necessity, but for his own disturbing satisfaction, even going so far as to record and keep footage for his personal viewing pleasure.
  • Although She-Hulk would supposedly never be able to change back to her human form again, it actually only proved to be a temporary problem, and some time after, she was able to change form once again.
  • She-Hulk makes reference to last year being 1984. This should be considered a topical reference per the Sliding Timescale of Earth-616.

Trivia

  • Jennifer Walters as a human is 5'6, approximately 30 years old, with brown hair and blue eyes. As She-Hulk she weighs 650 pounds.
