What does one who strikes from behind know of honor?
Not much, I guess, but I'm willing to learn. I'd like to make amends, if I can.

Synopsis for "Renewal"
At An Morag in the Scottish Highlands, Moira MacTaggert discovers a young mutant, Rahne Sinclair, with the ability to transform into a wolf who is being pursued by Reverend Craig and a group of parishioners. MacTaggert is able to rescue Sinclair from the mob and take her to Professor X.
While playing in a soccer match in Rio de Janeiro, Roberto Da Costa is attacked by a rival player, Keller, who racially abuses and physically assaults him. While being attacked by the larger rival, Da Costa's mutant power manifests and he is able to toss Keller across the field. On seeing the strange physical appearance and tremendous power of the mutant, the other players and the spectators flee the stadium. Da Costa remains on the field distressed, where his girlfriend, Juliana Sandoval (Earth-616) rushes to his aid.
In the Appalachian coalfield of Cameron County, Kentucky, Samuel Guthrie is starting his first shift at Pierce-Consolidated #7 mine. While inside the mine, there is a cave-in that pins fellow miner Frank Lewis. Guthrie uses his mutant powers to break them both out of the collapsing mine.
At the Medicine Bow Mountains near Sundance, Colorado, Black Eagle confronts his granddaughter, Danielle Moonstar, saying Professor Xavier will train her to control her mutant powers. She reacts angrily and inadvertently produces a vision of her grandfather's beating death at the hands of armoured assailants. She is immediately shocked by the vision and finally agrees to Black Eagle's plan. Later that night, Moonstar wakes from sleep with a start, fearing for her grandfather's life, she rushes to him only to find him already dead from a vicious beating.
Donald Pierce is monitoring the emergence of these young mutants' powers from a remote compound where he holds Tessa captive. He intends to destroy these young mutants along with Professor X, and take over control of the Hellfire Club from Sebastian Shaw.
At Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, the professor and Dr. MacTaggert are testing the powers of Xi'an Coy Mahn while Sinclair looks on. Although Xavier is hesitant due to the recent loss of the X-Men [1], MacTaggert convinces him to take the two new students on as trainees.
Having received a message from Black Eagle about his granddaughter, the professor travels to Colorado with his two new proteges. They find Moonstar being pursued by the same armored attackers who killed her grandfather. After defeating the attackers, Xavier discovers that they have been sent by Donald Pierce and that he also intends to target Da Costa and Guthrie.
MacTaggert, Moonstar, and Manh travel to Rio de Janeiro find Da Costa, but are arrested by the police suspecting they are involved in a plot to kidnap the young Brazilian and his girlfriend. Moonstar and Manh manage to escape custody and make their way to the Da Costa townhouse where they spot the boy as he is leaving. They follow him to a slum district where Sandoval is being held by Hellfire Knights. Da Costa battles the kidnappers and is helped by Moonstar and Manh. Sandoval is killed in the battle before the Hellfire soldiers can be subdued, and the girls convince Da Costa to join them to battle those responsible.
Meanwhile, Xavier and Sinclair are in Kentucky when they are attacked by Guthrie, who has joined the Hellfire Knights. Sinclair escapes, but Xavier is captured and taken to a remote compound in the mountains. Sinclair tracks them there and finds that Moonstar, Manh, and Da Costa have found her as well, using Moonstar's psionic rapport with animals to locate her while in wolf form. The group battles the Hellfire soldiers, including Guthrie, and find Xavier held captive inside by Pierce. They defeat the captors and leave Pierce in the custody of Tessa, who promises a severe punishment for Pierce in response to his attempt to seize control of the Hellfire Club. The group also leave Guthrie behind, but later he arrives at Xavier's school to ask to attend. Despite the reservations of Da Costa, Xavier agrees to allow Guthrie to join the school.
Notes
- Most of the New Mutants debuted in this story, except for Xuân Cao Mạnh who previously appeared in Marvel Team-Up #100.
- None of the New Mutants used code names in this story.
- Moonstar's Valkyrior steed Brightwind is named after her pony appearing in this story.[citation needed]
Trivia
- The story in this graphic novel was originally going to be used for New Mutants #1. Due to a delay in the publishing schedule of the Marvel Graphic Novels, Jim Shooter had Louise Simonson repurpose the work-in-progress of New Mutants #1 into a graphic novel, which also required her to add roughly 10 more pages to pad out the story.[2]
- Rio de Janeiro was spelled "Rio de Janiero" in this issue.
- Roberto Da Costa's room at Xavier's school has a picture of Wolverine on the wall.
