Synopsis for "Star Slammers"
While waiting for the Star Slammers to join them, the defenders of a citadel were overrun by the Skirks. After the Skirks left, three Star Slammers, Sphere, Jalaia, and Ethon, arrived at the citadel when the sun rose, much less than the defenders expected. After the Star Slammers went to their quarters to rest, a woman named Lackland warned them that the City Fathers planned to betray them and suggested that they help the Skirks win instead. In the Skirks' mothership, they contemplated losing nearly 1/3 of their forces the previous night. The Skirks' mothership landed near the citadel and the Star Slammers attempted to take prisoners before they warned the City Fathers about Councilor Lackland, who attempted to free the prisoners by attacking them in a fighter. Sphere grounded the fighter and the City Fathers reluctantly rewarded it to them as part of their contract that promised them the spoils of war.
Later on, the Star Slammers jumped into space in their ship contemplating how they needed the fighter and every weapon they could find to stop the Orions, who the Grandfather, also an Orion, claimed would come anytime. Ethon wondered if the Silvermind was real and Jalaia declared that he would become the deepest mind-bridger of any of them, achieve the Silvermind, and defeat the Orions.
Ethon recalled the last time he had bridged the Grandfather, Senator Galarius, as well as how his parents were killed by hunters of Orion for sport when he was a child. In an emergency session of the Senate, Senator Krellik, a member of the hunting party who was crippled by Ethon's father Topolis, revealed his experience and claimed that a new breed of exile would slay them unless they struck first. A majority of the Senate agreed to attack the exiles and Krellik confronted Senator Galarius for opposing them and revealed that one exile defeated them with a sling. After briding with the Grandfather, he was told that the Star Slammers' "true strength of warriors" was not enough to fight the hunters and needed the Silvermind to defeat them.
Later, ships from Orion found them and took Ethon to one of their ships to interrogate him while incarcerating Sphere and Jalaia. While being interrogated, Ethon mind-bridged with Jalaia and she told Sphere that he was being tortured. Ethon revealed to his interrogators that he was a member of the Star Slammers, the descendants of the exiles while Sphere and Jalaia left their lightly guarded cells and saved him. Sphere and Jalaia decided to have the dying Ethon buy them time while they planned to warn Homeworld that the hunters were coming. Then, a man ejected a lifeboat from the brigantine and crashed it onto another ship. Krellik, who became an admiral, set out to find the lifeboat.
Ethon used the Silvermind to warn Homeworld before he died while on Homeworld, Jalaia went to check on the citadel's fighter and Sphere visited the Grandfather who recalled meeting him for the first time, briefly fighting before the old man warned him about the Orions coming and suggested that he form the Star Slammers. Back in the present, the Grandfather told Sphere about his warrior ancestor who wielded a slammer.
Then, the Orions closed in on Homeworld while the other Slammers rushed to defend and Sphere ordered them to mind-bridge and reach for the Silvermind. While, the Star Slammers attempted to reach for the Silvermind, they struggled due to the distractions caused by the Orions. As the Star Slammers kept losing numbers, Sphere wondered if the Grandfather had set them up, so the Star Slammer ordered his allies to forget the Silvermind and stand their ground. Jalaia recalled how Ethon reached the Silvermind as he was on the brink of dying, so she decided to allow the Orions to attack her. Then, as they reached the Silvermind, Krellik revealed himself and announced that he planned to obliterate them all. The Star Slammers gained the advantage before the Orions attempted to destroy their main base only to be defeated.
Afterwards, the Star Slammers made their way home before Jalaia crashed. Sphere visited the wounded Jalaia and told her that they needed her to stay alive so that the Silvermind would be easier. Then, he visited the Grandfather who collapsed before him and told him to "be well." A few weeks later, Sphere gave a speech to his fellow Star Slammers about the Grandfather before flying towards Orion.
