Defenders #7

Running into Hawkeye in the streets, the Defenders engage in a brief battle with the bowman, until it's realized that they're all on the same side. Explaining his recent troubles and leaving the ranks of the Avengers, Hawkeye likes the idea of the Defenders, and asks to join them.

Traveling to Dr. Strange's Sanctum, they are informed by Wong that Strange is not home. There they are visited by one of Namor's followers who informs them that Attuma is going to attack the surface world. Going to the beach where Attuma is launching his attack, the Defenders are deserted by the Hulk who does not wish to go into the water.

The group is captured along with marine biologist Prof. Jennings. Taken aboard Attuma's ship they are separated from Namor, and learn that Attuma is working with the Red Ghost, and that they plan to use the Ghost' knowledge of cosmic rays and Jenning's marine biology expertise to create a cosmic powered aquatic army to take over Atlantis. Val and Hawkeye manage to break out of their cells, however just before they can attack the Red Ghost, he sends Namor (who has been brainwashed) against them.

Detailed Summary:
Red Ghost and Attuma have captured the Sub-Mariner, Valkyrie, Hawkeye and Professor Jennings in an attempt to capture Atlantis. The Red Ghost turns Namor into his mindless slave and sets him against his two comrades, who are easily defeated and prepared to be subjected to the same treatment.

Two weeks later, Dr. Strange has returned to his Sanctum Sanctorum to inform Clea and Wong that he has found a method that may free the Black Knight from his stone prison. He begins summoning the Defenders to share with them the good news, however the only heroes he is able to locate are the Silver Surfer and the Hulk.

Meanwhile back under the sea, Red Ghost and Attuma have finished their mind control over Namor, Hawkeye, and Valkyrie and are plotting to use them in their attack against Atlantis.

On the surface, as the other Defenders mull over what to do about their missing comrades, the Hulk mentions he might know where they went. Instead of telling them what he knows, the Hulk decides to leave. The Surfer tries to keep him from leaving and Dr. Strange casts a spell to put the Hulk in a trance. He commands the Hulk to remember and they learn that the missing heroes were captured by Attuma and taken under the sea, but the Hulk didn't want to go with them. Putting the Hulk to sleep, the Silver Surfer and Dr. Strange fly off to rescue their captured comrades.

Strange and the Surfer arrive just in time to see that their friends are being used as pawns in Attuma's attack on Atlantis. Combining their powers, they block the flow of cosmic rays from entering Earth's atmosphere which causes the Red Ghost's powers to fade. Thus, they are able to free their friends from the Red Ghost's mind control. The Defenders make quick work of Attuma and the Red Ghost, which turns back the invasion against Atlantis. With their foes defeated, the Defenders return Professor Jennings and head to Dr. Strange's home.

Chapter 1: Deception!!
After their battle against Attuma and the Red Ghost, the Defenders and Hawkeye have all gathered in Dr. Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum. There, gathered around the statue of the Black Knight, Dr. Strange informs them that he has found the means to contact their imprisoned friend.

Using his mystic powers, he sends a message out to the astral form of the Black Knight asking him if he is aware of anything that may set him free from his vantage point. The message goes to the Knight in an otherworldly plane of existence. The knight responds by sending a message back that he has no knowledge on how to get home, but that he is trapped in a timeless realm and is not suffering. This message is intercepted by Loki and Dormammu (who recently teamed up [2]) and use their combined magic abilities to change the message.

When the Defenders actually receive it, it tells them that the only way to free the Black Knight from the realm he is trapped in is to recover the Evil Eye. Although the Defenders believe that it was destroyed, they decide to seek it out in the hopes that it may still exist.

Defenders Vol 1 11 001.jpg

Detailed Summary:
The Defenders and the Avengers have defeated Dormammu and Loki and have reclaimed the Evil Eye. Dr. Strange, not wanting the world at large to know of the existence of a new super hero team, erases Nick Fury's mind (as well as the entire world's) of any knowledge of the Defenders. Only the Avengers are spared this memory wipe. Using the Evil Eye, Strange also repairs all the damage that Dormammu had done to Earth. With this work completed, he and his fellow Defenders leave the Avengers and head back to New York City.

Returning to his Sanctum Sanctorum, Dr. Strange attempts once again to free the Black Knight from his stone prison. Using the Evil Eye, Strange sends his physical body to the limbo realm where he initially contacted the Black Knight's astral form. To his surprise, he is not able to find the Black Knight there.

Dr. Strange returns to tell the Defenders, but they all find themselves suddenly transported to the 12th Century and right in the middle of the Crusades. They are met by the Black Knight, who is fleeing a large Arab army. The Defenders come to his aid, but are then attacked by a giant gnome named Temax. This earth spirit proves to be too powerful, so Strange makes the heroes vanish from the battle site.

Once they are safe, the Black Knight explains that he is living through the body of one of his ancestors. King Richard has been captured by the Arabs and now Prince John plans to desert the king and take over his army. He was sent here by Merlin's spell to fight Mordred, who has allied himself with Prince John. The Defenders agree to help the Black Knight rescue King Richard and stop Mordred's evil plans.

Disguising themselves, the Defenders sneak into the Arab's castle. The Defenders split up, half going to save King Richard while the others attempt to destroy the evil sorcery that is being used against them. They free the king, but are then attacked by more giant gnomes. Their elemental powers once again over power the heroes and they are defeated. Meanwhile, Dr. Strange, Hulk, and Namor find Prince John, Mordred, and an Arabian wizard named Chandu. They attack the villains, but are repelled by Chandu and other gnomes. During the battle, Namor manages to defeat the gnomes after discovering their weakness to water. Water is used to destroy the entire army of giant gnomes.

During the battle, the Evil Eye is taken from Dr. Strange by Prince John who is eager to use the device to destroy his enemies. Suddenly, Prester John appears (having traveled through time in search of the Evil Eye), seizes the device, and uses it against the prince and Mordred. With Mordred defeated, the Black Knight decides to stay behind and continue to fight in the Crusades under King Richard. Prester John returns the Defenders to their own time. Once back, Hawkeye, Hulk, Sub-Mariner and the Silver Surfer all decide to leave the Defenders and go out on their own. Dr. Strange and Valkyrie bid them farewell.

Full Synopsis:
With the Evil Eye in Dormammu's possession, the Dark Dimension begins to merge with the Earth-616 universe. This causes the landscape and buildings to deform and people to turn into demons. The Avengers and Defenders quickly jump into action, fighting off the attacking demons. Doctor Strange realizes that they need to enter the Dark Dimension and take the fight to Dormammu himself. However, Captain America cautions that if they all leave, then many people on Earth would perish.

Before a decision can be made, they are joined by Nick Fury and the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Fury's team agrees to stay on Earth to fight the demons, while the others continue into the Dark Dimension. As soon as they leave, agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. start to turn into demons and Fury realizes that the only path to victory is through the two superhero teams stopping Dormammu.

Deep in the Dark Dimension, Dormammu unleashed the full fury of the reassembled Evil Eye. He watches the heroes enter his dominion and once again Loki demands that he restores his sight. Instead he imprisons Loki, accusing him of plotting against him, and is subsequently surprised by the appearance of the Watcher. Uatu assures him that he poses no threat and is only there to observe the merging of the two dimensions.

Meanwhile, the Avenges and Defenders fight through an army of Mindless Ones as they progress deeper into the Dark Dimension. While in Earth-616, superpowered individuals throughout the world fend off the continuing invasion from the Dark Dimension.

The Avengers and Defenders manage to finally reach Dormammu, but the Defenders are quickly rendered unconscious by his power. The Avengers charge at him, but are easily entrapped. While Dormammu is distracted by the heroes, Loki uses it as an opportunity to strike at Dormammu from behind. The two struggle and the Scarlet Witch is able to strike Dormammu with a hex bolt, which causes his essence to be sucked into the Evil Eye. The beam from the Evil Eye then rains on Loki restoring his vision, however, it also drives him mad. Uatu explains that this latter effect is the result of Loki's mind absorbing the full force of Dormammu's mystic energy, which no mind from their dimension, not even that of an immortal Asgardian, can properly process.

With the villains defeated, the merging of Earth-616 and the Dark Dimension ceases and earth's inhabitants are restored to normal. The Defenders leave with the Evil Eye in hopes that it may hold the key to freeing the Black Knight, while the Avengers depart with the mind-ravaged Loki left in their care.
