Synopsis for "--And Men Shall Call Him... Ox!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Daredevil #15
Having returned to New York following his adventure with Ka-Zar in England, Daredevil returns to his apartment and resumes his guise as Matt Murdock, just as Foggy and Karen have arrived. Foggy almost faints, a remission to the injuries he sustained from Ox many months ago.[1]

Meanwhile, in the state prison, the Ox himself has teamed with his cell mate Karl Stragg, who offers to use his scientific know-how to give Ox the intelligence he's always wanted in exchange for busting them out of prison. However, when they break out of prison and escape to Stragg's lab, the device Stragg uses instead switches their body -- Stragg's plot all along -- and the now super-strong Stragg goes on a rampage.

It's during this rampage that Stragg is spotted by Karen Page, who recognizes him as the Ox, when Daredevil happens to swing by and see the behemoth. Daredevil battles him, but Ox easily defeats the masked hero and places an extra Ox costume on Daredevil so that when the police arrive they think that Daredevil is masquerading as the Ox to get away with crime and lock him up.

Meanwhile, Stragg takes Karen back to his lab where the original Ox (now in Stragg's body) knocks Stragg out and helps Karen escape. Stragg then goes on another rampage, leading the police to realize they have the wrong person and set Daredevil free to deal with the menace. Their fight takes them to the top of a building where the fighting-mad Stragg in Ox's body accidentally runs off the edge of the building and plummets to his death.

After the battle, Daredevil returns to his civilian guise and meets with Karen and Foggy. He find that Foggy will be okay while Karen wonders what happened to the man who saved her from the Ox. The story closes with the original Ox, feeling better and a little smarter in his new body, as he decides to return to prison to finish his sentence.

Synopsis for "Ultimo Lives!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Tales of Suspense #77
Quote1 Now, stand back! With the turn of a dial, I shall bring Ultimo into view..and under my complete control! Quote2
Mandarin
The Mandarin and his prisoner Tony Stark converse in his castle and the Mandarin explains construction of the giant android called Ultimo born in a volcano. Tony, here, is playing for time in talking up the madman and it nearly works as the Mandarin grows bored with his captive and thinks he has killed him off with a single blast from his power rings when he feels he must move on. This ruse plus the armor plate on Stark's chest allows Tony to slip away into the castle and to the moat where the Iron Man armor, in its attaché case, lays at its bottom. The Mandarin, for his part, is preoccupied by directing his android with the aid of a television monitor to attack the Red Chinese troops preparing to attack his fortress. The enormous Ultimo makes quick work of the troops as it is bulletproof and apart from the strength to match its size, it also has the ability to shoot from its eyes lethal beams of energy. Tony Stark has no trouble finding the armor once free from the fortress and arrives on the scene of Ultimo's fight with the troops as Iron Man and comes under attack. Back to the US, Senator Byrd meets with his committee to order the shutting of Stark Industries until such a time as Tony Stark appears before them in the capital to answer their questions about Iron Man. Back in Red China, Iron Man seems at first to be agile enough to dodge his opponent's varied assaults but the issue concludes with Iron Man caught in Ultimo's grasp.

Synopsis for "Crescendo!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Tales of Suspense #78
Iron Man was literally in the grip of the Mandarin's giant android, Ultimo, and hurtling toward a rocky wall. He then averts the stunning and perhaps lethal impact by using his jet boots to direct himself away from the rocky outcrop. Iron Man, though free, discovers that he is out-matched physically in every way to his foe. Weapons and strength are useless as the armored hero reels before the onslaught of Ultimo's eye beam attacks. The Mandarin is only viewing and directing the action from afar by television monitor and concludes that Iron Man is in flight. Rather than just purposeless flight from Ultimo, Iron Man acts on the knowledge he gained as Tony Stark in the Mandarin's Castle and lures the giant humanoid back to the volcano in which it was created. Iron Man gets Ultimo to unleash the power of the volcano itself in a dodge of the eye beams that have been assaulting him through the Chinese countryside. Ultimo is ultimately undone by the lava flow loosened by its own blasts and the Mandarin takes solace in his inevitable conquest of the world and believing to have killed Iron Man's employer Tony Stark. Iron Man however is still stranded in Red China though the Mandarin has abandoned any further interest in the Avenger. Iron Man crosses the landscape on foot to reach an air base of the Red Army that had been threatening the Mandarin before Ultimo attacked. Under-powered, Iron Man fights the remaining troops to get at a remaining MiG fighter that he hopes will fly him back to Western controlled airspace. Airborne in the stolen craft the Avenger is intercepted by US fighters but manages to avoid being shot down thanks to his Avenger security clearance. Back in the States and resuming his civilian self finds Tony Stark, a day later, at the gates of his now closed Flushing factory and offices with scattered discarded newspapers sporting the headlines that the government has ordered the place shut down. Tony reads from one of the papers the details that his money has been frozen and a warrant is standing for his arrest on top of the closure of all of Stark Industries.

Quote1 Like tales of black magic? Like action tinged with the supernatural? Like villainous villains and heroic heroes? Well then, settle back and READ! Because this story is just for YOU! Quote2
A knight of King Arthur's court resents the favor shown Merlin and so challenges him to a battle. Merlin's champion is a black knight who does succeed in winning the competition. The envious knight still sneers at Merlin and claims he has no true magic for the black knight bested him by force of arms whereupon Merlin makes a mystic pass and the empty suit of armor falls in pieces upon the ground.
