Marvel Team-Up #34

As Spider-Man sits and mulls over the supposed return of Gwen Stacy, he is attacked once again by the Looter/Meteor Man, who easily defeats the distracted Spider-Man and dumps him in New York harbor. Meanwhile, at the private riding academy of Kyle Richmond, Nighthawk (Richmond himself) meets with his fellow Defender, Valkyrie. Explaining his anger over his previous encounter with Spider-Man, when Nighthawk informs Valkyrie that he let the Meteor Man go free, Valkyrie flies off on Aragorn to capture him.

While elsewhere in the city, Jeremiah's church the Innocents of God are having a gathering that generates enough noise to attract the attention of a couple of police officers. When they try to interrupt the night's worship, Jeremiah destroys them with a bolt of mystical energy.

Spider-Man, web-slinging through the city, picks up a police report of the Meteor Man making another robbery. Deciding to check it out for himself, he offers his aid to the police. When Valkyrie arrives and offers her help, Spider-Man refuses and goes in alone. However, as Spider-Man battles the Meteor Man, Valkyrie enters the room and tries to help. Outnumbered, the Meteor Man flees the scene. When Valkyrie and Spider-Man free the shop owner they learn that the Meteor Man sought a statue made out of meteor stone.

Chasing after the Meteor Man, the two heroes attack him in the air, and are able to send him crashing down to the ground, knocking him unconscious. When turning the Meteor Man in and explaining to Valkyrie about the Meteor Man's need for psychiatric help, Spider-Man is watched by Jeremiah.

What If? #8

Daredevil fought Electro alongside Spider-Man when Electro figured out he was blind after setting off an extremely bright flare in front of his face. Spidey didn't believe it, and asked Daredevil what color Electro's costume was, confirming the suspicion.

Electo outed the secret to the Daily Bugle, and Matt continued to fight crime as Daredevil at the protest of Karen. The Owl tried to use this known weakness against him, and almost succeeded, causing Matt to reconsider a radical experimental operation to regain his sight.

Matt and Karen travel to Lichenbad to have the operation, and encounter the tyrant monarch Duke Klaus Kruger along the way. After the operation, Daredevil is forced to save the doctor who performed it and is subjugated to a large radiation dose from shutting down a Nuclear Pile Reactor.

The Dose causes Matt to lose his heightened extra senses, but he regains his sight. Upon arriving back in the States, the Owl immediately abducts Matt and Karen to participate in his form of a courtroom trial against the Judge (Lewis) who put him away. Matt calls Daredevil to the stand and leaves to get his key witness. Daredevil defeats the Owl and saves Karen as well.

Later Matt outs his secret identity to the press and runs for District Attorney. He wins, and he and Karen get married, seemingly living a happy normal life from then on.

As the sun begins to rise over the city, Morbius becomes determined to escape the painful light. He kicks the demon Balkatar from off of him and escapes to a dark alleyway.

Morbius runs through connected alleys, but Balkatar catches up to him and attacks. Morbius fights back but the encroaching sunlight weakens him.

To Morbius' surprise, Balkatar is intelligent and can speak. While conversing with Morbius, Balkatar hears a telepathic message from his leader, who he calls his "Majesty." Balkatar lifts the weakened Morbius and tells him to prepare to go on a journey.

Daemond suddenly bounds into the alleyway and orders Balkatar to kill Morbius, but Balkatar will no longer listen to Daemond. Instead, Balkatar bursts into a flash of light and disappears. Daemond goes back to Martine in anger.

Meanwhile, the Caretakers, having been watching from afar, are astounded and worried by the this series of events. They are now unsure how they will save humanity.

Elsewhere, Balkatar and Morbius appear on the cliffs overlooking another world, called "The Land Within." It is the home of demons. The place is filled with light, yet it does not hurt Morbius, for it is not natural sunlight like that of Earth.

Morbius tries to understand this new place, but Balkatar knows little of his own world as it is, so he dimisses Morbius' questions. He beckons Morbius to follow him to King Gerark's palace where they are expected. Balkatar surprises Morbius by stating nonchalantly that he is to be executed for disobeying Daemond's orders. Morbius is astounded since the King himself ordered Balkatar away, but Balkatar states that this does not matter. The rules are set in stone.

Balkatar and Morbius arrive as the thone room and are greeted warmly by King Gerark who immediately has Balkatar taken away to a prison cell.

The King informs Morbius that he was summoned to The Land Within to help solve a crisis. There is a population problem and the King needs a killer.

The king decides a history lesson might persuade Morbius. He tells Morbius that The Land Within was created by a sorcerer, Ebrok, who filled the world by transforming housecats into cat-like demons.

Ebrok and his fellow sorcerers created more and more cat-like demons, but after a few generations, their intellect increased and they became a threat to the sorcerers.

The cat demons revolted but were unsuccessful. The sorcerers imprisoned them with magic, creating The Land Within as a cage for the demons.

Each generation, a demon is chosen to be the Balkatar, a title meaning 'The Summoned One'. The Balkatar must do the bidding of whoever summons him.

The demons culture and science was enhanced drastically over time, and their population became too great for them to sustain themselves. The demons do not wish to harm each other themselves, so the king proposes that Morbius do their dirty work for them.

Morbius refuses to harm anyone. He escapes the throne room by leaping out of a window and vows to kill the king and free the Balkatar. Morbius is still weak, so he drinks from a cat demon. He accidentally drinks too much and kills her. With his strength returning to him, he suddenly realizes his is surrounded. The cat demons, who saw him kill one of their own, attack Morbius and throw him into a nearby river. At the end of the river is a wall of mystical energy. Morbius wonders if this is his chance to escape, so he dives underwater just as he passes through the wall!

Fantastic Four #222

With Franklin back from Whisper Hill, Sue devotes some quality parenting time to her son, though Reed has other plans for his time and takes the subway to the New York Public Library. Ben, who is going to a movie, accompanies Reed part of the way. Elsewhere, in the dimension know as the Dark Realm, Nicholas Scratch ponders his imprisonment at the hands of the Fantastic Four and his mother Agatha Harkness.

Seeking an escape from his otherworldly prison he senses an extra-dimensional portal he hopes will lead to him gaining revenge on his enemies, and so uses his eldritch powers to exploit the gateway. Johnny, meanwhile, is racing cars on a circuit in New Jersey. After a record-breaking lap he is courted by several admirers, one of which, a young lady by the name of Lorrie Melton, takes a shine to the Fantastic Four's youngest member. Back at the Baxter Building, Sue and Franklin are playing hide and seek. Franklin hides in the Negative Zone chamber at precisely the moment that Scratch accesses the extra-dimensional gateway, which by terrible coincidence turns out to be the N-Zone portal itself.

Sue follows Franklin into the chamber and is horrified to find her son suspended in an energy field emanating from the N-Zone. Reacting quickly she uses the Fantasti-flare to summon the rest of the Fantastic Four. As the team assembles in the chamber, it becomes clear that Franklin has become possessed by Scratch. Acknowledging that the Fantastic Four are inexperienced when it comes to such arcane matters, Reed dispatches Johnny to enlist the help of Dr. Strange, but as he leaves Scratch uses his powers to activate Reed's arsenal of experimental weapons and turn them against the Fantastic Four.

Across town in Greenwich Village, Johnny finds that the Doctor is not in, but his presence in the neighborhood is noticed by a passer-by who makes a phone call to the mysterious Gabriel, who appears to possess some empathy with the mystical happenings at the Baxter Building. With Johnny's return, the Fantastic Four manage to suppress Scratch's attack, enabling Sue to encase Franklin in a protective force field that enables the team to transport him to Whisper Hill. A short time later, at Agatha Harkness' mansion, the witch conducts a séance she hopes will shed light on the mystery. Gabriel arrives on the scene promising expertise in cases of possession. The group determined that a return to New Salem, scene of Scratch's banishment, is the best of course action to resolve the crisis and save Franklin's soul.

Synopsis for "Battle with the Big Man!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Marvel Premiere #40

In a Con Edison plant in Manhattan, the Torpedo struggles to regain consciousness, aware of the fact that his recent battle with the Rocketeers has set off some kind of chain reaction in the plant's nuclear pile. As the Rocketeers fly away, confident that the Torpedo costume will soon be destroyed, the Torpedo spots a main power cable that was accidentally sheared away during the fight, depowering the safety systems meant to prevent explosions. The Torpedo uses his costume to close the circuit and get the safeguards working again. Although it's incredibly painful for Jones, he is able to prevent an explosion by funneling the force of the reactor into the Torpedo costume. However, when the nuclear energy within the suit continues to build up, Jones realizes that he will have to discharge it quickly before he explodes. Lashing out with his atom-infused hands, the Torpedo causes the entire building to disappear into thin air. After seeing him wipe out an entire city block, two NYPD officers open fire but the Torpedo evades the bullets and escapes.

After returning to his home and changing out of his Torpedo suit, Brock is surprised to find Suzy, his wife's little sister, is there. Suzy explains that Lorraine called her to come over and watch the children while she went to the clinic. Suzy then reassures her brother-in-law that Lorraine is staying over for a complete check-up but everything is well.

Elsewhere, Wescott is berated by his employer because the Con Ed plant did not explode and the Torpedo escaped alive. The big man gives them all one more chance to get the prototype design for their army of super-soldiers or they will pay with their lives.

Meanwhile, Brock reviews how he received the Torpedo suit from its dying creator, a man from a foreign country who had been brought to America in order to design a super-suit but had discovered that his rich American relatives were actually a "fifth column" and had decided to stop them. Brock suddenly recalls a name from papers that the original Torpedo had retrieved from a safe-deposit box and realizes that he's known who the "big man" is all along. After phoning to make an appointment, Jones uses the Torpedo suit to fly into the city where, after changing into his civilian clothes, he meets with Senator Stivak in his office to discuss adding his name to the senator's next campaign.

That night, Jones lurks outside the building where the senator's office is and, once he sees the last secretary leave, he changes into the Torpedo suit to break in. Although he finds it funny that the windows weren't locked, he assumes that was because the office is on the 33rd floor and proceeds to break into a wall-safe he had spotted earlier to get the documents inside. As the Torpedo looks through the papers, he is unaware that he's being watched through hidden cameras by Stivak and some of his men. The senator takes a moment to reflect on what a fool he has been, by spending a great deal of money to track the Torpedo down without realizing that the Torpedo was trying to find him because of what Stivak's nephew, the original Torpedo, must have told him before dying. As the Torpedo is preoccupied with reading through the papers while talking aloud to himself about how the senator is an international agent of a foreign power who was planted in America years ago in order to grain enough influence that he would be able to weaken the country, Senator Stivak orders the Rocketeers to close in on the Torpedo. As the Torpedo continues to reminisce aloud about how the genius nephew who had been brought to America to design a series of rocket-suits had discovered his uncle's true plans, turned against him and had designed the inferior Rocketeer suits instead, he is taken by surprise when the Rocketeers attack. He puts up a good fight but is soon knocked out by Wescott, and the senator orders him to be taken to the mansion in Westchester where there will be less chance of anyone hearing his screams as he is pried out of the costume.

Hours later, in the mansion in Westchester, the senator and his men remain somehow unable to get the costume off of the Torpedo. When they begin using electricity to torture him, the Torpedo is able to use his suit's wrist-turbines to break his bonds and free himself. The Torpedo quickly takes out the Rocketeers and then concentrates on assaulting the senator. However, while doing so, he punches Stivak into the fail-safe panel, accidentally activating its destruct-circuit. With his plans and dreams destroyed, the senator goes bananas and attacks the Torpedo who punches him into the Rocketeers as they were trying to regroup. Telling himself that his enemies didn't look like they were willing to listen to reason, the Torpedo flees, leaving them behind in the mansion which explodes seconds later. As the Torpedo flies off, hoping that the original Torpedo can rest easier now that his uncle has been stopped, Senator Stivak pulls himself out of the rubble of the sub-basement of the demolished mansion and gloats that he has won since, when the authorities come to investigate the explosion, they will discover the attempted assassination of a US senator with all the evidence pointing directly at the Torpedo.

Back at home, Brock makes it to his den and changes out of the Torpedo costume in time to greet Lorraine as she returns home. After they kiss, Lorraine reveals that that she is pregnant with their third child. As their children watch, the happy couple kiss again.
