Synopsis for "The New Defender!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Defenders #4
Believing that Dr. Strange is responsible for harming Barbara Norriss, the Hulk bounds over to a nearby castle to get away from him. Following with Namor, Strange and the others are transported to a mystical relam. Strange and Namor are then overpowered by the Executioner and an army at his command.

Locked in the same cell with Bruce Banner (who has changed back into human form) and Barbara, they also notice that in another cell are the Enchantress and the Black Knight. Enchantress explains that after her last battle with the Avengers she and the Executioner traveled to this realm and the Executioner soon became the consort of the queen Casiolena, much to Enchantress' chagrin. Wanting revenge she charmed the Black Knight into helping, but both were defeated and locked up.

Using her magical powers, Enchantress turns Barbara into the Valkyrie, and with the help of the Defenders manage to free themselves. In the heat of battle, the Enchantress kills Casiolena, and reclaims the Executioner as her own. However, when the Black Knight revolts believing that the Enchantress loves him, she informs him that he was only a pawn in her game, and turns him into stone before leaving with the Executioner.

The Defenders then travel back with the stone Black Knight, where Valkyrie adopts Aragorn, and decides to join the Defenders, whether they like it or not.

Defenders #13
Nighthawk drops in on the Defenders, and after a brief battle he informs them of the events that brought him to Dr. Strange's Sanctum: He and the rest of the Squadron Sinister were restored and gathered by the mysterious alien being known as Nebulon who was seeking super-powered beings to "sell" the Earth to him. The Squadron then agreed to build a device that would melt the Earth's polar ice-caps and flood the planet as part of the conditions of sale. Finding such a plan too horrible, Nighthawk refused and was banished from the meeting however Nebulon insured that he could not warn the Avengers, making Nighthawk invisible to Earth's mightiest heroes. Overhearing them speaking of the Defenders, Nighthawk would instead seek their aid. Needing extra muscle on this mission, Dr. Strange teleports Namor to their side, and the group battles to stop the Squadron Sinister from activating the device, however in the course of the battle they are trapped in a mystic bubble by Nebulon.

Detailed Summary:
After being called to his old foe Yandroth on his deathbed, Doctor Strange is warned by the techno-wizard that he has created a doomsday machine called the Omegatron to destroy the Earth five hours after it's activated.

In order to save the world, Dr. Strange gathers the aid of Namor the Sub-Mariner. He recommends getting the Silver Surfer to help, but they find that he is busy trying to break through the barrier that keeps him on Earth. They witness the Surfer hitting the barrier and falling back to Earth unconscious and determine that they cannot wait for him to recover.

They instead seek the assistance of the Hulk to find the Omegatron and destroy it, before it can start a nuclear chain reaction that will destroy the planet. They pin point the device to a lighthouse in Maine. The three heroes enter the lighthouse from different paths using their special skills. Namor enters through beneath through the ocean. The Hulk enters through the front, while Dr. Strange uses his astral form to scout the building. Strange eventually enters the main room where he meets Omegatron, who explains that Yandroth sent Strange on this path intentionally so that Omegatron could harness the power from Strange's allies. Namor and Hulk soon enter and Strange tries to explain why they cannot harm the machine or else the planet will be destroyed. The two take this as a hallucination presented to them by Omegatron and attempt to force their way past. Strange, left with no other option, pits his friends against each other to distract them, making them see hallucinations to fight one another.

With ample time, Strange then casts a spell around the lighthouse slowing down the progression of time to an eternal crawl, so that it will be centuries before the Omegatron finally counts down it's final moments before detonation. With the threat of the Omegatron at least postponed indefinitely, Strange explains what happened to the now somber group. Dr. Strange declares that should they need to reunite, they will be called the Defenders. However, Hulk expresses his distaste for the idea of being in a group after having already been in the Avengers.
