Synopsis for "Klaatu! The Behemoth from Beyond Space!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Incredible Hulk #136
Having revived from his adventure through time somewhere in modern day Europe, Bruce Banner hitches a ride to a NATO unit and is personally escorted back to the United States under the supervision of General Ross and Glenn Talbot, on a steady dose of tranquilizers to keep him from transforming into the Hulk. Along the way, Ross tells Bruce that both Betty (who suffered a nervous breakdown) and Jim (who was injured by Hydra) are recovering well together.

As they fly into New York and pass the Empire State Building, some invisible force near it causes Bruce to suddenly transform into the Hulk, smash out of the plane, and climb up the building. As this is happening the same force appears to be draining all the electricity out of the city. Suddenly in space, a giant space vessel appears and Xeron the Star-Slayer is dispatched to Earth. This alien being has been dispatched by his masters to destroy a creature known as Klaatu, an energy creature that is "from beyond space."

When the Hulk reaches the top of the ESB, he is shocked by the arrival of Xeron and the sudden appearance of the gigantic Klaatu. Confused by the whole tableau unfolding the Hulk decides to attack Klaatu. However, he's beneath the creature's notice and it simply swats him out of the way before disappearing again.

Furious over the Hulk's involvement, Xeron has his slaves "row" his hunting ship toward the Hulk so that they may capture them. The Hulk has revived and tries to fight off Xeron and his men. Xeron, however, uses his energy harpoon to incapacitate the Hulk, draining him of enough energy to knock the green giant out and make him easy for capture. Taken aboard the ship, the Hulk revives and learns that his old foe the Abomination has a high ranking position aboard the ship.

Synopsis for "The Stars, Mine Enemy!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Incredible Hulk #137
Forced aboard the a ship of aliens hunting the alien creature Klaatu, the Hulk is once more face to face with his old foe the Abomination who is First Mate aboard the vessel. Naturally, the Hulk and Abomination begin fighting, however the fight is soon broken up by Xeron the Starslayer who tells the Abomination that the Hulk will be useful in their hunt of Klaatu. An alien named Cerexo takes the the Hulk with him and explains that they have been all consigned to hunt down the illusive Klaatu and that they had found the Abomination in their chase, and since his addition to the crew the monster has killed his way into the position of First Mate.

The Hulk spends his time thereafter being forced to row the giant space ship, and live and work among the aliens, all the while the Abomination is plotting his revenge on the Hulk. One day the Hulk is out watching the Earth in the distance when the Abomination attacks from behind, knocking the Hulk into space, Xeron and the others pull the Hulk back aboard the ship and Xeron warns the Abomination not to try another attempt on the Hulk's life. Just then they are summoned to meet the captain of the vessel, an alien named Cybor.

In Cybor's presence, the Hulk is told by the half alien half machine that he has been on a quest to destroy Klaatu ever since the creature destroyed half his body. The Hulk is then sent back to his room where he suddenly reverts back into Bruce Banner. Although he is without the Hulk's great strength, Banner is put aboard one of the hunting vessels to row with the other aliens on their next trek to hunt down and kill Klaatu.

During the hunt, Banner is knocked loose and is attacked by the Abomination, causing him to transform back into the Hulk. Cybor meanwhile harpoons Klaatu, but gets pulled and gets stuck on the creature as it flies into the sun killing him and seemingly destroying itself. Xeron and the others, on a damaged vessel, realize that their fate is numbered as well, with no means of returning to their ship and their artificial atmosphere on a limited supply, they too will meet their eventual end.

The Hulk and Abomination continued their fight, their blows bringing them close to Earth's atmosphere to be pulled in by the planet's gravity sending them into a free fall to the planet's surface.

Synopsis for "Sanctuary!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Incredible Hulk #143
Following his most recent rampage as the Hulk, Bruce Banner finds himself the subject of a manhunt, with authorities and military officials scouring all of New York City to try and find him. With the police chasing him and desperate to make a getaway, Banner is picked up by Dr. Doom and taken to the sanctuary of the Latverian Embassy, where Doom's diplomatic immunity protects Banner.

Despite this, General Ross, Major Talbot, and Betty Ross arrive outside the Latverian embassy and ask Doom to release Banner into their custody. They are joined by Doc Samson, who reveals to them that he has learned that his strength is affected by the length of his hair and offers his aid. Ross orders him to stand down when suddenly, Doom apparently releases the Hulk. This is, in reality, a robot duplicate of the Hulk, and when the military is forced to shoot at the monster, they believe that they have killed the Hulk, a realization that upsets everyone as they did not wish to destroy the Hulk at the cost of Bruce Banner's life.

When Banner realizes that Dr. Doom had planned their meeting all along, he attempts to transform into the Hulk, but Doom knocks him out with a powerful gas. With Banner now his prisoner he orders the scientist to be loaded up in one of his crafts and taken back to Latveria.

Arriving in his native country, Dr. Doom has Bruce Banner taken down to his laboratory where he plugs him into a subliminal inducer, a device he hopes to use to subvert the Hulk into following his cause and send him out to ravage the world so that Doom can become the supreme master of the Earth.

Synopsis for "The Monster and the Madman!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Incredible Hulk #144
General Ross, Major Talbot, Betty Ross, and Doc Samson are still reeling over the supposed death of the Hulk, completely unaware that this has all been a ruse created by Doctor Doom so that the Latverian monarch can exploit Banner's intelligence and the Hulk's brute strength to further his goals of world domination.

In far off Latveria, Banner has been subjected to Doom's subliminal inducer making him a loyal slave to Dr. Doom and put to work designing weapons for the dictator. When Doom brings his love Valeria to meet Banner and gloat over his usefulness. However this fails to warm Valeria's heart, and when she learns that Doom is using Banner to recreate the Gamma Bomb, she is horrified. At the mere mention of the Hulk's name, Banner begins to panic and transform into the creature, however, the brute is easily subdued by Doom who knocks out the beast with a powerful gas, causing him to revert back to Bruce Banner. Doom then explains that he intends on using the Gamma Bomb to force the annexation of the surrounding countries.

Although the bomb is not complete, Doom orders his minions to send the Hulk out with it strapped to his back to attack his enemies. Implanting in his mind that his enemies are nearby, the Hulk is sent out with the gamma bomb. However, much to Doom's anger the bomb goes off too soon and harms nobody. He then learns that Valeria sabotaged his plot, using his own subliminal inducer to change Banner back to normal. Before Doom can have Valeria thrown in his dungeon, the castle is attacked by a furious Hulk.

When their battle puts Valeria at risk of injury, Dr. Doom selflessly uses his force-field to protect her. However, the Hulk is still looking for a fight and is about to crush Doom to death, until Valeria, not wanting to see her one-time love killed begs the Hulk to spare him. Making a connection between this situation and his own failed relationship with Betty, the Hulk glumly wonders why he hurts beautiful women with his actions and decides to leave.

Bounding off into the distance, the Hulk departs Latervia with Dr. Doom shouting at him to come back and finish their fight.
