Synopsis for "January, 1940"
In their laboratory, Joel Williams shows a reporter a sample of a substance he and his brother Joshua Williams call live rubber, which he says they discovered inside of a meteorite. Attempting to duplicate it, Joel says their experiments were unsuccessful until he accidentally cut his hand and spilled some blood into the petri dish. As the reporter reacts in horror, Joshua interrupts and assures the man that it consumes adrenaline to grow, and that phenethylamine -- commonly found in chocolate -- has the same effect. Joel says that once they had enough of the substance, they used it to create a humanoid robot they dubbed Flexo. As Joel comments that Flexo is rather goofy-looking, Joshua admonishes his brother and says the robot saved their lives several times before asking what paper the reporter works for,
The reporter states that he works for Mystic Comics, one of the newfangled superhero comic books. In response to the brothers' dismayed reaction, the reporter says that Mystic Comics feels that print alone can't do justice to the adventures of costumed heroic figures like the Human Torch, Angel, and Monako. Joel notes that Flexo has caught their attention now, and the reporter says that the brothers said that Flexo had saved their lives and asked what happened. Pulling out a small device, Joshua says that Flexo found them thanks to this remote control, ignoring Joel's attempt to clarify that the device isn't a remote control but a signal emitter. Joshua regales the reporter with how he and his brother had been kidnapped by Dr. Otto Murdo and his mobster henchmen, who'd stolen radium from their lab to build a doomsday weapon. As they reach the part where Dr. Murdo and his henchmen attacked Flexo, the awestruck reporter asks what happened next. Sharing a nervous glance with Joel, Joshua says the bullet holes emitted a non-lethal knockout gas and that Dr. Murdo and his henchmen were turned over to the police -- omitting that Flexo had actually transformed into a feral monstrous form and devoured Dr. Murdo and his henchmen.
As the reporter leaves to publish Mystic Comics' next issue, Joel scolds Josh for not keeping his mouth shut. Josh smugly asks if Joel doesn't want to be in the funny books, and that this will put them on the map. Josh notes that it's only a matter of time before the United States enters World War II and that Flexo could work wonders on the front lines. Joel berates Josh for his arrogance, saying that they can't truly control Flexo -- what he called a remote control is merely a signal emitter, and he only obeys them because they feed him. Joel grimly asks what will happen when someone tries to give Flexo orders after they're gone, a flash-forward occurring to Flexo battling fellow symbiote Venom and its host Dylan Brock decades later.Appearing in 6th story
