You don't want to stand out? Good. Do your mom a favor today and remember that. You know me. That I live for the spotlight. And your dad, he likes to clown around and make people laugh. Well, for one day, don't be like us. Just blend in, okay?

Mary Jane Watson-Parker[source]

History

Mary Jane Watson-Parker appears to have had a similar history to her Prime Marvel Universe counterpart, up to the point that the superhuman Civil War was averted.[4] As a result, Mary Jane and her husband, Peter Parker, remained married and had a daughter, Annie.

Secret Wars[]

After the Multiverse was destroyed by incursions, and recreated in the form of Battleworld, MJ and her family found themselves in a domain known as the Regency, fashioned from the remnants of Earth-18119 by the iron will of God Emperor Doom.

Mary Jane and her daughter, Annie, were attacked by Venom in their home, though MJ was able to convince Spider-Man to kill the villain to protect their daughter.[5]

As Annie grew up, she developed spider-powers of her own. Mary Jane would become very fearful of her daughter's liberal use of her powers, and when Peter made his return as Spider-Man, she convinced her husband not to leave Regency, but to hide in the shadows using his black suit.[6]

When Kraven the Hunter realized Spider-Man was fighting like a scared father, Regent called in all families connected to Public School 122 Mamie Fay for a power screening. Despite her family passing, a fellow classmate of Annie's, Lewis, was outed as a Mutant. With Peter abandoning them to save Lewis, Mysterio was able to locate Mary Jane and her daughter. Luckily however, S.H.I.E.L.D. found them first.[7]

As Mary Jane acquainted herself with the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, she quickly became annoyed with their lack of urgency to rescue her husband, and the idea of no longer having a life; however, her outlook rapidly changed as Annie made quick work of the invading Sinister Six. This convinced her to leave with the Avengers to rescue Peter themselves rather than run to safety.[8]

While the Avengers tried and failed to neutralize the Regent, Annie decided to help her father, and struck the villain with an Inhibitor Chip-infused Trick Arrow obtained from Hawkeye; however, even with his powers neutralized, the Regent was still a threat. Peter, Annie, and MJ, using Dr. Shannon Stillwell's Empire Unlimited Test Suit, teamed up to beat him up, but the Regent got hold of Annie.

Spider-Man bluffed his way next to the Regent, and made a joke that caused the villain to laugh and be distracted long enough for Peter to strike a finishing blow that knocked him out. The Avengers then proceeded to take the Regent into custody using an improvised restraining unit created by the Prowler.[9]

Brawl in the Family[]

Following the restoration of the Multiverse,[10] Peter reversed engineered Regent's Empire Unlimited Test Suit to mimic his own spider-powers for his wife, since Annie was increasingly engaging in super-heroics and needed someone to keep an eye on her.[11]

Under her new role, MJ was recruited by the S.H.I.E.L.D. of Earth-41940 into the Spider-Men, a group of Spider-Man analogs assembled to combat the Multiversal Sinister Six.[3]

Meanwhile, MJ had opened a boutique in SoHo which drew the attention of a prominent fashion critic. She went to the diner next door to celebrate the development only to learn that Spider-Man was involved in an incident at the former site of Empire Unlimited Headquarters.

Donning her new costume, MJ went to assist Spider-Man in a fight against the Mole Man's forces. There she rescued her daughter from the Moloids and agreed with Peter that Annie should stay back.

Peter then informed her that there was something wrong with the Regent tech MJ was utilizing to mimic his powers. While they were talking, the ground gave way and the pair fell down into Subterranea. Waking they found Mole Man plotting to use some of Regent's tech for himself. When asked who she was, MJ claimed she was Spinneret and that she was angry.[1]

Venomverse[]

In order to avoid the constant power drain her suit exerted on her husband, Spinneret accepted a biotechnological suit provided by Liz Allan. In reality, the suit was the Venom Symbiote that Allan Biotech had somehow acquired.[2] Eventually, the suit assumed control over her and tried to kill Spider-Man to exact vengeance on him for killing Eddie Brock years earlier, but MJ faced the symbiote in a mental incursion, and, with Peter's help, she suppressed its hold over her, bringing it totally under her sway.[12]

Bonded to the Venom Symbiote

Her bond with the suit had left her vulnerable to the Poisons, an extra-dimensional life form that needed to bond with a symbiote, feeding off its host's nutrients to complete the bonding process. Because of this, Venomized versions of Captain America and Doctor Strange recruited her to help them defeat the Poisons while she was in a medical appointment.[13] Despite being there to help, she and an alternate version of Spider-Man that kept the Venom symbiote had conflicts with the Eddie Brock from the Prime Marvel Universe because of everything that their own versions of Eddie Brock did to them, judging he was likely no different from them.[14] In the end, they were able to stop the Poisons by causing their ship to explode moments after Doctor Strange returned her and the other Venoms to their proper realities.[15]

Shortly afterwards, the Spider-Family became involved in a battle with Ms. January, the conclusion of which resulted in the destruction of the Venom symbiote stuck to MJ. Afterwards, Mary Jane resumed using her original Spinneret outfit.[16]

Across the Spider-Verse[]

At some point, MJ and Annie joined Miguel O'Hara's Spider Society based on Earth-928B. MJ was in the cafeteria when Miguel ordered the entire Spider Society to chase escaping Miles Morales, though did not pursue until the chase spilled into where she was. She was also among the army of Spider-People pursuing Miles into the space elevator train bound for the moon, narrowly avoiding Miguel when he was pushed back by Miles.[17]

Spider-Geddon[]

After Annie started having strange visions, the family was visited by two Spider-Girls from other realities: Anya Corazón and Mayday Parker, a grown up version of their late daughter. They explained that all Spiders were connected by the Great Web of Life and Destiny and that the Inheritors have returned, threatening everyone who was connected to it. Annie felt a connection to mystical scrolls brought by Anya, so Peter and MJ left her with the safety of the Spider-Girls, while they themselves went to join the fight raging on Earth-616.[18] They joined the Spider-Army and were part of the team that went to Earth-13 to investigate the Enigma Force.[19] Despite the efforts of other Spiders, Solus was brought back to life and none of the Spider could match him. The fight went bad, and Peter and MJ said their last words and shared their last kiss. MJ only lamented that she could not see Annie one more time when she and the other Spider-Girls arrived from Loomworld. Annie was revealed to be the Patternmaker and provided a boost to her teammates, who joined many other newly-arriving Spiders to defeat the Inheritors once again.[20]

End of Spider-Verse[]

In her new role as a Protector of the Great Web, Annie accidentally released the Elder Goddess Shathra, who set upon capturing, killing or converting all Spiders across the Multiverse, Annie being the first to be turned into her servant.[21] Peter was absorbed into the Hive, but MJ was not a Totem, so she was locked away with other captives Shathra was unable to turn, such as Spider-Mobile and The Other.[22] They were eventually freed by Hunter-Spider and Night Spider. Silk stabbed Morlun with the Totem Dagger, releasing Shathra's thralls[23] but also throwing all Spiders Earth-616, where they dealt a combined defeat to Shathra.[24]

Weaknesses

  • In order to copy her husband's powers, Mary Jane's suit drains some of the strength of his powers, resulting in Peter being somewhat weaker than he usually is. It is made even more apparent when the two are in close proximity to each other, which results in a far greater rate in power drain.[25]
