History
Mary and her husband Richard were spies who worked for the United States of America.[1] They were the parents of Peter Parker.
Posing as traitors to their country, Mary and Richard traveled to Russia to gather information on a machine called the Doomsday Device, which the Red Skull had forced Dr. Wolfgang Groitzig to create. However, when their deception was discovered by the KGB, they hurried to warn Groitzig of the danger and entrusted him with the evidence they had obtained, believing they would never escape alive. Mary comforted Groitzig's young daughter Illyena, who had been listening in to their conversation, and was reminded of her own son.
The KGB was later implicated in the plane crash that killed Mary and Richard, when they attempted to return to America. Mary's son Peter was left to be raised by her husband's brother Ben and his wife May, and he eventually became the superhero Spider-Man.[1]
While infiltrating a cult belonging to Baron Mordo, Peter experienced an illusion that Mary and Richard had reunited with him. Mary appeared to speak to him and offer him reassurance, but he was ultimately freed from this influence by Doctor Strange.[2]
After learning from Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. that his parents were traitors, a disbelieving Peter traveled to Russia to clear their names. With help from Daily Bugle colleague Joe Robertson, Peter tracked down Illyena Groitzig, who revealed the truth about Mary and Richard's activities in Russia, which Peter vowed to expose to the world.[1]Attributes
