History
The Matriarch was aboard the main Universal Church vessel when it was boarded by Emperor Quill and his soldiers. The Matriarch sent a wave of Black Knights against him but Quill was able to dispatch of them with ease.
The Matriarch was asked by one of her subordinates to escape to the ship but she said that she was going nowhere because everything that was happening was part of the Dark God's plan. She was confronted by Quill who told her that there was no way that the church was going to chase his people off their own planet, but she told him that he should have taken mercy and evacuated Spartax before their God arrived.
She said while Quill was attacking them, their God was on the other side of the system eradicating Quill's people as their was no defense and marked the planet with the symbol of the Church encrusted on the surface of the world.[1]
Years later, the Guardians of the Galaxy infiltrated one of the Church's ships and obtained info on how to stop the Church: the Ultimate Nullifier. The Guardians were all killed by the Imperial Guard, but their ship the Milano escaped. The Matriarch ordered the Imperial Guard to go after the ship and kill whoever received the message the ship delivered, which turned out to be Quill.[2]
Later, after the Church conquered New Xandar, the Matriarch received a message from Pulsar that Quill was on Earth but hadn't found the Ultimate Nullifier and that Earth had no heroes left, leaving it defenseless. She personally informed the Church's god Galactus of this development, making Earth the Church's next target.[3]
As the Church prepared to invade Earth once Galactus consumed, Galactus was defeated by Quill using a Time Stone shard. Without Galactus, the Church couldn't maintain their mind control of the enslaved crews of most of their ships. The Matriarch frantically ordered her remaining forces to retreat.[4]See Also
