History

Matthew Caniglia was the only child born to Doc Justice and Sarah Jo, the first Princess Justice. Together, they were "the First Family of Justice." Unfortunately, Sarah Jo died on a mission when Matthew was still an infant.

After years begging Doc Justice to take him on as his new protégé, Matthew finally became the second Kid Justice at age seventeen. In addition to himself and Doc Justice, the new J-Team roster included SPF, Trench, and the third Princess Justice. At some point in time, Matthew became involved in Doc Justice's scheme to routinely kill off members of the J-Team to raise his own profile as the stalwart hero of Los Angeles, which Matthew genuinely believed helped him protect the city. He eventually retired from active superheroics and began providing technical support to Doc Justice following an operation called "Clear Slate," that disbanded the J-Team, leaving Matthew's superhero alter-ego as missing in action. When Doc Justice brought the Runaways under his wing, Matthew provided them with costumes and was joined by Gert Yorkes in monitoring the missions of Doc Justice and the new J-Team, later offering to teach her how to run Mission Control.

While monitoring one of the J-Team's missions, Gert became curious about the team's former members, and Matthew went over the history of the team with her. She became suspicious of the high mortality rate of Doc Justice's protégés, and later looked through Matthew's computer, eventually discovering the truth behind their deaths. Matthew tried to stop her from rushing to the scene of an ongoing mission that was planned to end with Karolina Dean's death at the hands of SPF, but Gert convinced him to help her. Together with Gert's pet dinosaur Old Lace, the two managed to intercept the staged mission. Matthew briefly held his father at gunpoint, but lacked the conviction to stand up against him, and quickly desisted. The incident ended when Victor Mancha arrived and immobilized Doc Justice long enough for Old Lace to sink her teeth on him. Matthew tended to SPF and left the scene with her, leaving his father's body behind.
