Maxine Danger[source]

History

Maxine Danger was the head of the Super Hero Development Department for the Beyond Corporation working out of the Beyond Tower in New York City. As such, she oversaw the enlistment of Peter Parker's clone Ben Reilly into becoming Beyond's own corporate-sponsored Spider-Man.[1] While the Super Hero Development Department helped Beyond gain a positive foothold in the perception of the public, its secret ultimate purpose was to work in tandem with a super villain division to orchestrate conflicts whose collateral damage could be used to wipe out any desired targets.[3]

Maxine met and held a private conversation with Ben when hearing doubts of his performance by her colleague, Marcus Momplaisir. When voicing those doubts and talking with Ben, she was pleased when he alleviated her worries about his performance and wished him well in his therapy session with Dr. Ashley Kafka.[1] After Ben's unsuccessful attempt to catch Morbius, Maxine asked the doctor about the consequences of letting the vampirism go unchecked in Ben's blood. When the doctor responded how pondering was unethical, Maxine ordered the doctor to administer the antitoxin, and exited the med-bay.[4]

Shortly after, she assigned Hero Department agents Misty Knight and Colleen Wing to subdue a new threat in Obsidian Star. However, the given capture technology led to a solid-hologram space, and while it was a golden testing opportunity, communications went down shortly after the two heroines used an anti-matter grenade. Upon their return, Maxine debriefed them to know what happened and was disappointed that Obsidian Star's power source wasn't delivered. But as they note her voice and the legality of her "disciplining them" could backfire, she was forced to save face and grant them some days off.[5]

Following Ben's abduction by Kraven, Maxine called Marcus for answers, reiterating her authority over him. With Ben returned, she was whelmed by his recovery status and resumed talks with lawyers on a lawsuit against the Brooklyn Spider-Man.[6] After Ben defeated new villain Rhizome, Maxine was annoyed he failed to enforce Beyond's copyright to the super hero name and placed Marcus on disciplinary action. She finished her lecture with Ben before returning to a watch room, learning of Doc Ock's investigation into them, readying a sample of Rhizome in planned counter-measure.[7]

With Doc Ock's siege of the Beyond Midtown branch and Spider-Man's failure to stop him, Maxine elaborated that the data drive contained ultra-sensitive information for Beyond.[8] As Doc Ock attacked Beyond Tower, Ben fought him and claimed to have destroyed the drive in the skirmish,[9] but Maxine found he was lying when spying on his therapy session. Before he could divulge sensitive details, Maxine deployed security measures and took him for memory editing.[10]

After a touch-and-go memory edit, Maxine lied to Ben that Janine left him, then successfully petitioned the Beyond board to create new super villain, Queen Goblin, by merging Ashley Kafka with the captured sins of Norman Osborn. Equiping surveillance on the Goblin gear and directing her new villain to the Daily Bugle to stop a whistleblowing Janine, the drive was destroyed in the fight with Spider-Man. Expecting a further battle, Maxine was stunned that Ben just abandoned the fight; Ben's morality had been compromised by Beyond's memory-tampering, which he had become aware of.[11] Seeing that the original Spider-Man returned to best Queen Goblin, Maxine demanded eyes on Ben and was unnerved to learn that Ben was heading to Beyond's Staten Island super villain facility, sending a widespread red alert across Beyond frequencies.[12]

Ben freed a monster called Creature Z from the Staten Island facility to cause a distraction while he went after Maxine at the Beyond Tower to figure a way to reclaim his lost memories.[13] Danger activated Beyond's contingency measures to destroy evidence of her work and a portion of the building, and evacuated. When Ben stormed the tower, she used a holographic decoy to communicate with him, coaxing him into trying to use the memory-extracting device on the original Spider-Man to take back his memories from their source. She then used another decoy to convene with her superiors, which saved her life from an execution attempt, after which she bid farewell to her former employers.[14]
