History

Pressyne, daughter of the serpent lower-bodied demoness Maralith and descendant of Set, took on the form of a fairy and married Elynus on the condition he would not see her in labor. Pressyne gave birth to triplet daughters, but Elynas rushed into the birthing chamber, causing Pressyne to depart with her daughters, Melusine, Melior, and Palatyne, and fled to the lost isle of Avalon.

On their 15th birthday, Melusine learned the reason for their banishment, and consequently led her sisters to capture Elynas and imprison him in a mountain. Learning about it, an angered Pressyne punished her daughters for their disrespect, including Melusine being cursed to become a "serpent from the waist down" every saturday.[1]

Roaming the world, Melusine ended up in the forest of Colombiers in Poitou, France, where she met Raimond de Lusignan who had accidentally slain his uncle, the count. Melusine soothed Raimond's woes, concealed his guilt. She granted him great wealth, and bore him ten sons, including Geoffrey and Urian, all somewhat deformed. Eventually, Raimond followed Melusine and had a glimpse at her true form, losing her forever. As she vanished, Melusine swore that when she appeared over the castle Lusignan, it would get a new lord within the year. Melusine sired Yith, a daughter with the lower body of a serpent, in Poitou,[1] though the identity of the father remains unrevealed.[2]

Notes

  • Melusine was a female spirit of fresh water in European folklore and mythology, usually depicted as a woman who is a serpent or fish from the waist down.[3]
