History
Mephisto a demon who ruled the extradimensional Hell. He also was for a long-time ruler of Limbo, having displaced its original ruler Belasco.[1]
On her sixth birthday, young Illyana Rasputin felt that she was forgotten by her parents. Mephisto used the child's insecurity to abduct and imprisoned her in Limbo where he forged her into his weapon. When Magik's mutant power manifested, she rose up against her oppressor. Illyana became Mephisto's apprentice and forged her own indomitable life force into a weapon. Using the Soulsword, teleportation, and a shrewd intelligence, she eventually overthrew the demon-lord and took the throne of Limbo from him. Magik returned to Earth, though deep insight she remained traumatized by her experience with Mephisto and dared not even utter his name.[2] Mephisto abandoned Limbo and returned to his own Hell.[1]
During the Prophecy of the Midnight Sun, Johnny Blaze made a deal with Mephisto to keep the Hunter trapped in Limbo. Without them, the Prophecy of Chthon's return could not come to pass, and Mephisto had no interest in having him as competition. Blaze tricked the Hunter and Robbie Reyes into going through a portal to Limbo. Seating on a throne, Mephisto greeted them as they arrived. Blaze explained the deal he had made and tried to get Ghost Rider to leave with him, but Robbie refused. A moment later Mephisto told Blaze that the deal only guaranteed safe passage for him, and teleported him away, leaving Hunter and Ghost Rider alone. Mephisto approaches the heroes and summoned a group of minions, surrounding Hunter and Ghost Rider. Suddenly Magik's voice came from behind, seated upon the throne that Mephisto had been using moments earlier. Magik was furious, and sent Hunter and Ghost Rider back while she stayed behind to have words with Mephisto.[2]
When the Midnight Suns performed the Grey Seneschal ritual to bind the spirit of Agatha Harkness to the Abbey. Mephisto hijacked the ritual and possessed Agatha. Mephisto wanted to strike a bargain, promising to release Agatha if Illyana was to be turned over him. Instead, Magik cast a spell to banish him and forcibly ejected Mephisto from Agatha's spirit.[2]
When Hunter prepared to kill vampyre-infected Venom, Mephisto, who offered to cure Venom of both their vampyrism and Lilith's corruption in exchange for the Midnight Suns agreeing to help defeat Dracula who had reneged on a deal made with Mephisto. Mephisto teleported the Hunter and Venom to Limbo and threatened to re-corrupt Venom unless the Midnight Suns upheld their end of the bargain by defeating Dracula. Venom annoyed Mephisto into telling them and the Hunter where to find Dracula, attacking him when he threatened to imprison them in Limbo forever if they failed. Venom helped the Hunter and Spider-Man face down and defeat Dracula and destroy the last of the vampyres. While Dracula escaped swearing revenge, Mephisto was nonetheless pleased and declared that the Midnight Suns had fulfilled their end of the deal.[3]Notes
