Metis was the Titan Goddess of wisdom and thought[2]

After Zeus impregnated her, he was foretold by the Fates that their child would be greater than him.[3] Zeus consequently consumed Metis in an attempt to prevent that prophecy.[3] Nine months later, Zeus was afflicted with violent headaches. Hephaestus trephined him, giving birth to a fully grown and armored Athena.[3]
