History

Mick "Mountain" Marko was a bouncer who worked for Tombstone. He earned his reputation by participating in various brawls throughout New York.[1]

During a gang war with Sonny Caputo, Tombstone, angry at Luke Cage, called Marko to give him a beating. Together with Tombstone, Mick found Cage in Dixie's liquor store. Seeing the uninvited guests and sensing something was wrong, Dixie hurried to get a gun, but Marko attacked her. Luke intervened and tried to stop the brawler, but was distracted by Tombstone pointing his weapon at Dixie and was ruthlessly beaten by Mick.[1]

Marko returned to the store the next evening to finish off Cage, but he wasn't there. He threw Dixie out onto the street and met Cage there. They fought and this time Luke Cage emerged victorious, managing to easily beat up "Mountain" Marko and tying him to a street corner with chains around the neck. Mick was later shot by Clifto Townsend.[2]

Notes

  • Mick "Mountain" Marko is obviously based on Man Mountain Marko, however, since Cage (Vol. 2) was said to take place on Earth-616 by Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: Marvel Knights 2005 #1 and Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z #2, it can't be the same character since they have nothing in common, making them just namesakes. The Appendix to the Handbook of the Marvel Universe supports this and lists them as two different characters.[3]
  • Cage MAX was not intended to be canon for Earth-616, as evidenced by differences in the characterization of some characters and heavy hints in the final issues that Luke Cage is not actually bulletproof, but it was integrated into the continuity by the handbooks, so the fact that Marko was able to easily beat Cage can be explained by him having some superhuman abilities.
