History

Middletown was a small town in Arizona. The Leader planted a gamma bomb in the centre of town. The Leader taunted the Hulk with the knowledge and gave him a deadline to find and deactivate the bomb. When the Hulk arrived, the authorities found his claims difficult to believe.

When the Hulk finally found the bomb, the Leader used Rock and Redeemer to weaken him. The trio teleported away and detonated the bomb. In the ensuing explosion all but five of the residents were killed.

The entire area of the town was irradiated with gamma radiation and those survivors were mutated. The recovery workers quickly began to call the remains of the town "Gammatown."

Diablo would later use a soil sample from Gammatown to mutant the entire town of Kalkhimithia into Hulk-like beings.

At a later point in time, the Arizona Legislature determined that the Leader was responsible for what became known as the "Middletown Massacre", and had him captured to stand trial in Phoenix. She-Hulk had been part of the prosecution team, but the Leader called Doc Samson to his defense, claiming that as a "gamma transformed person" he was not at fault.
