Synopsis for "Gunsmoke Showdown"

Reprint of the 4th story from
Matt Slade, Gunfighter #4
Bull "The Schemer" and his gang witness as Matt Slade rides into the town they are about to hit. Bull has heard that Slade is no longer an outlaw When his men try to shoot the hero, Bull stops them, deciding that they can pull off their job without killing him right off and spoiling the element of surprise. He notices that Slade has an attachment to his horse and instructs his men on how to use that to their advantage. While Slade goes to grab a bite to eat, some of Bull's men go into the stable where Eagle has been placed and steal the horse, purposely leaving a trail for Slade to follow. When Matt finds that his horse has been stolen from the livery stable, he borrows a horse and follows the obvious trail. Eventually he catches up to the men who took his horse, he easily subdues them and recovers Eagle. He learns how he was lured out by Bull so he can rob the local bank and Matt pushes Eagle to get him to town before dawn. When Bull and his men attempt to rob the bank Slade is there to stop them and easily subdues them and turns them to the authorities. Bull realizes that he erred in his plan when he didn't consider how quickly Slade's horse could bring him back to town.

Synopsis for "Sacrifice for the Sioux!"

Reprint of the 5th story from
Two-Gun Kid #49
The Two-Gun Kid is on the hunt for escaped outlaw Hank Quantrell. While out on the trail looking for him, Quantrell manages to get the drop on him and creases the Kid's head with a bullet, knocking the heroic gunslinger out. Hank then leaves the Kid to die in order to flee across the border into Mexico to avoid recapture. The Kid comes to a short time later and follows after Quantrell's trail but finds evidence that Hank was attacked by Sioux warriors along the way. Further along the trail, he finds Quantrell's guns, confirming his fears that Hank is a prisoner of the Sioux. Although Quantrell is an outlaw who tried to kill him, Two-Gun cannot bring himself to leave Hank at the mercy of the vengeful Native Americans and follows after their trail. At the Sioux camp, Hank is brought before their chief, Red Feather, and is considered a coward when he begins to beg for his life. Before the Sioux can execute him, the Two-Gun Kid arrives and demands that they release his prisoner. When Red Feather refuses, he orders his men to kill the Two-Gun Kid. Surrounded by bow wielding braves, the Kid dives down while half of them shoot, hitting their comrades instead of the Kid. Two-Gun then draws his Colts and blasts away the uninjured warriors weapons. The Kid then shoots Hank's bonds free and escapes with him. Along their way out, Hanks vows to turn himself in and go straight. Meanwhile back at the Sioux camp, Red Feather orders his men to stand down, telling them that the Two-Gun Kid's bravery won him the freedom to leave freely.

Notes

  • Two-gun Kid Clay Harder was redrawn here as "Matt Hawk" despite the total incoherence. Later accounts establish that in Earth-616 existed duplicated accounts of both Harder and Hawk adventures (possibly by cause of dime novel neglect) and that the Clay Harder one has more validity.[1]
