Retelling of the story "Beward! The Rawhide Kid!" from Rawhide Kid #17
Rancher Ben Bart raises his adopted son, Johnny, to become the best possible gunfighter he can be. Johnny quickly adapts to wielding the twin "magic" colts and learns a variety of gunfighting techniques including the "Road Agent's Spin" and the "Border Shift". Shortly after his eighteenth birthday, Ben sends Johnny into town to pick up the monthly provisions. While he is gone, two gunfighters named Hawk Brown and Spade encroach upon the Bart ranch. Hawk challenges Ben to a draw, but Spade distracts Ben Bart, allowing Hawk to get the drop on him. The gunslingers leave, cowardly leaving Ben's body dead on the ground.
Johnny returns home only to discover that his beloved father had been killed. Tracking the murderers, he arrives in a nearby saloon where he finds Hawk and Spade. Johnny shoots the revolver out of Hawk's hand, and fires two shots behind his head to disarm Spade (whose reflection he had seen in a mirror).
Determined to rid the world of people like Hawk Brown, Johnny leaves Rawhide atop his trusted steed Nightwind. He soon adopts the identity of the Rawhide Kid.
Kid Slade is on the trail of Trigger Jones, a trail that leads him to "Edge House" so-called do to its proximity to the edge of Native American territory. A shoot out ensues but in the middle of the fight renegade warriors under the leadership of Bear Claw come bursting in and take Trigger Jones prisoner. Kid Slade goes after him and is captured by Bear Claw's men as well. Kid Slade is then taken to Bear Claw who accuses him of being in league with Trigger, and refuses to believe the contrary.
However, Kid Slade evokes tribal law by challenging Bear Claw to a battle to win his freedom and the right to take Trigger Jones as his prisoner. The two fight it out with tomahawks, and while Bear Claw breaks Kid Slade's blade, the Kid manages to easily defeats him in battle. Bear Claw accepts the defeat and allows the Kid to go free with Trigger as his prisoner. Thankful for having his life saved, Trigger Jones surrenders to Kid Slade, preferring living in prison than dying at the hands of Bear Claw and his minions.
Going into a saloon to grab a bite to eat and relax, the Two-Gun Kid goes to the bar and orders a glass of milk. Local bully Storm Smith decides to cause trouble by shooting the glass out of the Kid's hand, spilling milk all over the place. Furious the Two-Gun Kid tries to draw, but his hands are slippery due to the milk. Instead he dives down avoiding Storm's shot. This leaves him open to a blow to the face from Storm Smith, who believes that the Two-Gun Kid is no threat and walks out of the saloon.
Furious, the Kid decides that he is going to make it so Storm Smith never uses a gun again. Before he can go and confront Storm, Two-Gun is stopped by Storm's older sister who begs the gunfighter not to kill her brother, and the Kid promises not to. The Kid goes outside and challenges Storm Smith to a draw and easily shoots the guns out of his hands and then beats Storm into submission. Storm cries uncle and the Kid gets him to promise to treat strangers in town with kindness from now on and then rides out.
