Synopsis for "Kid Slade, Gunfighter"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Kid Slade, Gunfighter #7

Kid Slade is called in by governor Anson Clinton to a private meeting with his friend Parker Fenn the president of the Great Western Railroad that is currently building a rail line across the plains. Parker and his secretary Jim Tully explain that the railroad is in trouble due to the fact that they posted a $50,000 bond that the rail construction would reach French Crossing by the end of the month, failure to do so would ruin the company and put it out of business. He explains that the line has been troubled with acts of sabotage, payroll robberies, and rowdy workers getting drunk and fighting. Kid Slade agree to take on the job to be a trouble shooter for the railroad.

Kid uses the fact that his pardon is not well known to his advantage when he pulls into the rail town and goes into the local saloon. His reputation of being an outlaw leads to a fight which catches the attention of King Cabot the owner of the saloon. Cabot invites Slade into his office and offers Kid to join his group that are trying to prevent the railroad from being constructed. The Kid accepts the job and asks who has hired them to do it, but Cabot says it is the biggest stock holder in the Pacific Southwest Railroad. However, soon the rest of the gang comes in and they know about Kid Slade's cover and tell King. With his cover blown, the Kid is quickly subdued and left tied to a chair while the gang goes out to celebrate before killing him. However Kid Slade breaks free and easily subdues the gang while their guard is down. When Parker and Jim Tully arrive at the scene, Kid Slade reveals that Tully was the man who hired King Cabot and his gang, as he was the only other person present in the meeting to know about Kid Slade's double identity. When Tully ties to pull a gun on Slade, the cross-draw wizard is easily able to disarm the elderly Tully and take him into custody. Thanks to Slade, the railroad is completed before the end of the bond deadline.

Synopsis for "Two-Gun Kid"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Two-Gun Kid #11

Southwestern Railroad is having trouble keeping it's workings in line, as whenever work on the rail line is done they go into the rail town and get drunk at Brett's Place and get into fights. It's gotten to the point that it is effecting production and railroad owner Franklin Calhoun faces financial ruin if the rail line does not get finished in time. Calhoun hires on the Two-Gun Kid to work as a trouble shooter to keep the workers in line much, after all the others have been killed by men in the employ of Brett, to the chagrin of his daughter Bess. Cal Brett learns of Two-Gun's employment and warns the Kid not to bother his patrons or disturb his business or he will regret it.

Calhoun takes the Two-Gun Kid to meet Paddy, the foreman of the railroad. When Two-Gun asks him and the other workers not to go to Brett's Place to drink. The foreman refuses to do anything about it and the two eventually break out in a fist fight. However, the Kid manages to win the fight. In the aftermath, Paddy stands down and orders his men back to camp, telling them that they are not going to be drinking that night.

The Two-Gun Kid decides to ride around the area and get to know the land better. While out riding, Paddy warns the Kid of that Brett's hired gun, a man named Wolf, is about to shoot. The Kid manages to evade the shots fired at him and shoot Wolf dead. The Kid is thankful to Paddy but wonders why the foreman is suddenly willing to help him out. Paddy explains that he has no grudges and that he won his fight fair and square. The Two-Gun Kid continues on his way, he is jumped by more men hired by Brett. They subdue the gunslinger and ties him up. Brett then begins smashing the Kid's hands with the butt of his gun. After this torture, Brett has his men tie up the Two-Gun Kid to the rails to be killed by the upcoming train and leave him to die alone.

However, before the train can run him over, the Two-Gun Kid is rescued by Paddy who arrives in the nick of time. Two-Gun and Paddy ride back into the rail town where the Kid confronts Brett. As it turns out Calhouns daughter is in love with him, but the Kid shoots him dead anyway. In the aftermath, the Two-Gun Kid leaves, convinced that Calhoun's daughter will soon find love with Paddy.

Notes

  • Two-gun Kid Clay Harder was redrawn here as "Matt Hawk" despite the total incoherence. Later accounts establish that in Earth-616 existed duplicated accounts of both Harder and Hawk adventures (possibly by cause of dime novel neglect) and that the Clay Harder one has more validity.[1]
