Dad...I did my best.

Mikel Fury[source]

Mikel Fury was the son of Nick Fury. Raised by his evil mother Amber D'Alexis, he grew up hating Nick and believing his "father" was the villain Scorpio. Succeeding Scorpio, he and his mother attempted to kill Fury, leading to the truth being revealed and Fury shooting Mikel in a heartbreaking encounter. Though D'Alexis was willing to let Mikel die, Nick saved Mikel and sought to rehabilitate him after D'Alexis' death.[1]

To Nick Fury's pride, Mikel became a benevolent politican.[5] He occasionally helped his father in S.H.I.E.L.D.[6] and later led his father's Caterpillars' Grey Team to fight both Leviathan and Hydra,[7] but he tragically lost his life trying to kill the Hive.[4]

History

Mikel Fury was the son of Nick Fury and Amber D'Alexis. His mother trained him and raised him believing he was Scorpio's son. Following Scorpio's suicide, Mikel followed in Scorpio's footsteps and took on the mantle, complete with an imitation Zodiac Key. Mother and son targeted Nick and attempted to kill him but got Wolverine involved as well. When D'Alexis was restrained by Nick, she revealed that Nick was Mikel's true father, shocking him enough for her to break free. Choosing between his son and Wolverine, Nick hesitantly fired on Mikel, injuring his shoulder. Despite Mikel bleeding out, D'Alexis seized the Zodiac Key and planned to kill both Fury and her own son, reasoning that Mikel would have no life anyway and Fury losing his newly-discovered son would make him suffer even more. Mikel cried out for his mom, though it was not clear if it was out of disbelief or in warning for Wolverine immediately stabbed her, killing her on the spot. Nick convinced Wolverine to spare Mikel, and as the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., he took Mikel in, planning on healing him both physically and mentally.[1]

Becoming President[]

Political beginnings

When civil war broke out in his home country of Carpasia, he stole the Cosmic Key from S.H.I.E.L.D. and became Scorpio again. With the help of Fury and Wolverine, he stopped Hydra's coup d'etat and became acting president of Carpasia.[5]

The Punisher[]

Mikel was unable to prevent corruption in Carpasia's government, so he eventually returned to the States and rejoined S.H.I.E.L.D. as a full agent.[8] Scorpio assisted S.H.I.E.L.D. in the hunt for Frank Castle after he escaped custody, but was unable to prevent the apparent murder of his father, Nick Fury.[9] Scorpio was satisfied when Castle was apparently put to death in the electric chair.[10] After he learned Castle survived his execution, however, Scorpio hunted him down with S.H.I.E.L.D. resources against the orders of his superiors. This led to Mikel being thrown out of S.H.I.E.L.D. altogether.[11]

Grey Team[]

Mikel returned to politics and had an office in Moldova. With S.H.I.E.L.D. gone during Norman Osborn's reign, Nick sent Mikel to gather and lead the Grey Team of the Caterpillars. Alongside his friend Carlos Ayala, they recruited Lynn Richards, Red Webo, Sandra Murphy, Jenny and Malcolm Monroe, Bryan Cole, and Robert Martin.[4] They were tasked to research the Soviet shadow organization Leviathan but had difficulty finding anything more than rumors until Nick's breakthrough with Seth Waters. Nick summoned Mikel and the other Caterpillar leaders, Daisy Johnson and Alexander Pierce, to discuss their plans against both Leviathan and Hydra.[7]

Death[]

A year after being called back into action by his father, Mikel and his team were all killed in a mission to the destroy the Hydra base called the Hive. They had planted a bomb, but the base was being commanded by one of Hydra's leaders, also called the Hive. To prevent the Hive from controlling them with his parasites, Mikel blew up the base in an act of sacrifice while Nick heard his last moments on the comms.[4]

Fury mentioned Mikel's death when executing Baron Strucker in vengeance.[12] Later, Fury told his other son "Marcus Johnson" about Mikel's fate, though Marcus went forward anyway to join S.H.I.E.L.D. as Nick Fury Jr.[13]
