History

Dr. Miles Van Ert was a scientist employed by the Roxxon Corporation. He was eventually contacted by Leet Brannis, a thief who stole Nitramene devices from Howard Stark and thought Van Ert would be interested in studying the Vita-Rays the device gave off. Van Ert met with Brannis at one of Roxxon's factories, but their meeting was cut short by Agent Peggy Carter. Van Ert and Brannis went after the intruder, but she incapacitated Dr. Van Ert with a flash. Brannis, however, managed to escape by activating one of the Nitramene devices, destroying the factory.[1]

The next day, the SSR investigated the destruction of the factory. Despite Roxxon CEO Hugh Jones' protests, Chief Roger Dooley wanted to screen the Roxxon employees for any Vita-Radiation that may still be on them after the blast. Chief Dooley had agents Carter and Jack Thompson screen the employees. Agent Carter recognized Dr. Van Ert as the man she encountered at the factory, but, as she had gone there in secret, she did not want to reveal she recognized him. When he passed the screening, Agent Carter asked him to wait, and asked Jones if his employees changed their clothes when they came to work. They did, so Agent Carter suggested the clothes in the locker rooms be screened instead of the employees as Vita-Radiation sticks to clothes much more strongly than they do flesh. Realizing he had been caught, Dr. Van Ert started to run away, but was cut off and taken down by Agent Carter. He was brought back to the SSR's office. He at first refused to give any names to Chief Dooley, but gave up Brannis' name after Agent Thompson brutally interrogated him.[2]
