History

Doctor Doom built this cell to imprison The Thing, a hardy, armored enemy of his. The device was an ovoid-shaped steel podium that, once activated, generated a web of monomolecular chains, too thin to be seen by the naked eye, thus surrounding the prisoner[1][2] in a semisphere. Anyone trying to go through the strands suffered great physical damage, no matter whether the person had some kind of armor, and risked to be slashed in pieces.[2] An external control panel was used to switch it on and off.[1][2]

Doctor Doom had one of these devices in the basement of the Latverian Embassy of New York City, and attached its control panel to the ones of three other unique cages for the other members of the Fantastic Four - the Aquarium Cage, the Force Cage and the Plasteel Sphere. Once, Doom imprisoned the She-Hulk -who had replaced the Thing in the Fantastic Four- in this item and her colleagues of the Fantastic Four in the others. Doom intended to make them witness his triumph by restoring his original body and summoning the Beyonder. Mister Fantastic talked his way out of this situation, being released himself while Doom was teleported away. Having this chance, Fantastic released the She-Hulk and his other partners.[1]

Notes

The book Machines of Doom #1 suggests that Doctor Doom may have a unit of this device at his castle in Latveria.
