In ancient Egypt, Mirage and Magik are stranded after a mistaken teleportation effort by Magik, while a mysterious party perceives their arrival with tarot cards. With Magik needing time to recover before making another effort, they flee from angry guards, and are secreted away and aided by the sorceress who had observed them, Ashake, who turns out to be a distant ancestor of Storm. She uses the tarot cards (that she invented) to chat with Magik about her powers and her destiny. Suddenly they are assailed by the minions of the evil Heka-Nut. Despite their efforts they are both captured. Seeing Magik unleash her soul sword, Heka-Nut tries to steal her soul, but finds it is already corrupt and calimed by another.

Heka-But says he has sought a powerful artifact, the Sword of Bone, for centuries. He knows its location but it is magically protected; he orders Magik and Ashake to retrieve it, keeping Ashake’s soul as a hostage. Exploring the crypts, they come upon a death trap and Magikt teleports them to the site of the Sword of Bone, where the Ashake invokes the goddess Ma’at to help them vanquish a pair of enormous serpents. They deliver the sword to Heka-Nut, but in his corrupt hands it becomes a mere bone again, and Magik runs him through with her soul sword, casting off his power, which Ashake collects in an urn. As the human vessel of Heka-Nut wanders off confusedly, they return the Sword of Bone to its secret booby-trapped vault, and later, when Mirage is revived, they teleport away.

| Synopsis2 = On a train in Egypt, Ian McNee notes that a female passenger is wearing acacia perfume. He tells her how the first perfumes in ancient Egypt were considered magic. The woman reveals herself as Ammut, servant of Ma’at; McNee offers her an ostrich feather for passage into her halls. During transit to the psychic plane, Ammut asks about McNee’s vision, and the magician he was asked to save. He says Heka-Nut was a good man turned bad, and needs to be revived. To do so he needs four ancient artifacts of power, including the Sword of Bone, in her possession. She cannot give it without a challenge, so he summons a storm and battles her monstrous form. She says it must be an intellectual combat; if he fails to answer the riddle, she will devour his mind. He correctly answers her riddle, and wakes up on the train with (a miniature version of) the Sword of Bone around his neck. He remembers Ammut’s parting words; to find the next item, the Ebon Rose, sacred to Gaea, he must seek out Morgan le Fay.
