After bringing the Helmet of Power to Atlantis, Namor leaves with Lord Seth to find the Herb of Healing to help restore Tiger Shark to human form. Unfortunately, soon after he leaves, the Helmet of Power transforms into its true form, the Serpent Crown, and takes control of Dorma and the rest of the Atlanteans. Namor fails in his quest to help Tiger Shark and when he returns, is attacked by his own mind-controlled people. He takes the Crown from Dorma and puts it on. He gets visions of the early origins of his people.

Karthon the Questor battles Namor for the crown and is defeated. He reveals to Namor the history of the Serpent Crown and of the mad tyrant Naga. Unfortunately, Captain Barracuda captures them both on his way to steal an atomic weapon. Namor frees himself but must decide whether to pursue Karthon who has fled with the Serpent Crown or to stop Captain Barracuda's atomic torpedo!

Namor stops Captain Barracuda's torpedo but the Navy attacks him as they believe him responsible for the attack. Captain Barracuda slips into the Naval base, under the confusion of the battle and steals the "Sonic Magno-Directoid". Captain Barracuda makes the mistake of activating it and a torpedo meant for Namor destroys Barracuda and his vessel.
