History

Napoleon G. Robberson[1] was one of the Skrulls who lived on the planet Kral IV where the residents had patterned their culture after that of the "Gangster Era" of the United States of America during the 1920s and 1930s. Like the other Kralian Skrulls, Robberson used his shape-shifting powers to constantly maintain his chosen human form.[2]

Robberson was employed as the Slave-Keeper who oversaw the training center where alien slaves were trained as gladiators to fight in the Great Games. When Ben Grimm, a newly-captured slave from Earth, was brought to the training center, Robberson was present to establish discipline. Stating that Grimm didn't look so tough to him, Robberson was displeased by Grimm's smart mouth and gave him his first lesson by pitting him against Taxtor. After letting Taxtor batter Grimm for a bit, Robberson had them separated and sent Grimm to the cell occupied by Torgo, the Mekkan that Grimm was scheduled to fight to the death in the Great Games.[2]

Robberson continued Grimm's training by having him battle first a Magno-Man and then a Rhinogon. When the Hypno-Glow that kept Grimm from attacking the Skrulls began to wear off, Robberson had one of his men shoot Grimm with a Brain Blast Gun that made Grimm so woozy that Robberson was able to push him over with one hand. Robberson then tried to use a Hydraulo-Press to kept Grimm pinned to the floor. However, when Grimm was able to crush the machine with his bare hands, Robberson was impressed and stated that, even at the price of ten Power Stones, he thought Boss Barker had gotten got a bargain in him. At that point, Robberson decided that the slaves were ready and had his "dames" begin spreading the word that the Great Games were starting. After accompanying the slaves the the Arena, Robberson took his position as the operator of the Sonic Disruptor, the device that the Kralian Skrulls could use to destroy the home planet of any slave who tried to turn against them.[1]

After his match with Torgo had begun, Grimm tried to convince his opponent to team up with him against the Skrulls, prompting Robberson to remind him that the Sonic Disruptor could destroy his home planet. When Grimm expressed his doubt that the device was real, Robberson provided a demonstration by using it to knock some of the asteroids near Kral IV out of their orbits and into the sun. This made Grimm realize that he did have to fight after all.[3]

Later, after Torgo had defeated Grimm but refused to kill him as the crowd demanded, Robberson reacted by activating the Sonic Disruptor and telling Torgo that he had sealed the doom of both his world and Grimm's. However, before Robberson could destroy either Mekka or Earth, the weapon was destroyed by shock waves hurled by Crystal, one of Grimm's three Fantastic Four teammates who had just arrived to rescue their kidnapped friend. Since the destruction of the weapon meant that their home worlds were now safe, Torgo began freeing the other alien gladiators and led them in a violent revolt against the Skrulls who had enslaved them.[3]

Notes

  • This character's appearance and his name were apparently modelled on those of Edward G. Robinson, a Romanian-American actor of stage and screen who is best known for his portrayal of tough-guy gangsters in movies. Furthermore, since later stories established that "old-time gangster movies" from Earth were among the inspirations for Kral IV's culture,[4] it's possible that this Skrull was actually imitating Robinson.
