—Ash Morse[source]I'm doing exactly what you taught me to do. I’m standing up for the people I care about.
History
Ash was born Natasha Cassandra Bishop Jones to Kate Bishop and Jason Jones, a man Kate met and worked with while helping refugees find safe havens in the northwest area of what was formerly the United States of America. Kate named her after two people she admired, hoping that she would turn out like them.[2]
After Jason died on a mission while Natasha was half a year old, Kate decided that the life she was living was too dangerous for a baby, so she brought her to Clint Barton and Bobbi Morse, who had settled down in Hammer Falls, and asked them to adopt her and keep her own identity as the birth mother secret. Clint and Bobbi called her Ash for short, as it was too painful to call her by her full first name.[2]
When Ash was seven years old, she found her father sneaking out of the house one night. He promised her that he would eventually return and that he would always be there for her, but it was made clear from a voice message that he left for Bobbi that he wouldn't be coming back.[1] The next day, Ash was crying at school, and her neighbor Max comforted her. After that, Ash and Max were best friends and when they were older, they eventually fell in love.[7]
In high school, Ash decided to run for school president on a platform of telling the truth about the repressive government of the Kingdom of Zemo and to try and make positive changes.[8] Worried about what might happen to Ash, Max bought and took a drug called hype, hoping to get powers to protect Ash if necessary. The powers Max received caused an explosion in the school, killing some students and teleporting Max to the desert. Everyone, Ash included, assumed that Max was dead.[7]
Her heart broken, Ash swore to get revenge. She heard that the source of the drugs was the Brotherhood Traveling Circus, Carnival and Ringmaster's Road Show that was coming into town, and knowing that Clint was a member of the circus, she found him there and demanded that he help her kill whoever was responsible for dealing the drugs.[1] While investigating the hype at the circus, she also met her birth mother, Kate, who tried to convince her to join her in the northwest, helping refugees.[2] She didn't go with Kate, distracted by the fact that she had just found out that her new friend Junior was the source of the drugs. She chased after Junior, who explained that he had been manipulated by the Ringmaster, and not only that, but that Max was still alive and and safe, hidden by him in the woods next to the circus. Max and Ash reunited, and these experiences made Ash question her plan for revenge.[7]
Later on, Ash, Max, Clint, and Bobbi discovered that the so-called King Zemo was actually Zemo's teenage son, and that Helmut Zemo had died over a decade earlier. Herman Zemo didn't want the job and he ran away the moment he could, leaving his mask (with voice box) behind. Ash decided to use his mask and impersonate him in order to make positive changes to the Kingdom.Attributes
