History

When Legion, the mentally unbalanced mutant son of Professor Charles Xavier and Gabrielle Haller, travelled back in time in an attempt to kill Magneto, he accidently killed Xavier instead, creating a splinter universe known as the Age of Apocalypse. In that reality, mutants became the dominant species of the planet. Apocalypse rose to power enslaved humanity.

Nathaniel Essex, a brilliant scientist and geneticist living in England in 1859, was one of the first men in the world to discover the mutant gene. He made it his life's work to create the perfect mutant. His work led him to be contacted by Apocalypse. En Sabah Nur transformed Essex into the mutate Sinister and brought him into servitude. Sinister was at Apocalypse's side when they witnessed the battle that killed Charles Xavier. It was the same day Apocalypse declared his war on humankind.

During these early days of his partnership with Apocalypse, Sinister adopted two brothers with exceptional mutant abilities. The Summers brothers, Alex and Scott, were the closest Essex had found to genetic perfection. Scott's genes were of particular interest to Sinister; he hoped to one day use them to create the most powerful mutant on the planet. When the Summer's father Christopher returned to Earth from being in space. Sinister would cover up his return and run tests on him for five years when it was discovered that he was infected with a Brood embryo. Summers would escape, and Sinister would be forced to send his adopted boys to hunt down their father. Ultimately, Christopher would be slain, fortifying the bond between the Summers and Sinister[1]

Sinister would begin working with the Dark Beast to create many genetic monstrosities, including Apocalypse's Infinties[2]. During this these early years, Sinister would lean that the mutant Jean Grey and his own Cyclops were a perfect genetic pair to create the ultimate mutant. He would capture Jean and take her DNA, until she was rescued by her lover Weapon X[3]. With this DNA, Sinister would create the super-powerful mutant whom he would name Nathaniel Grey. His intentions for Grey would be to groom him to be the ultimate weapon to destroy Apocalypse, whom Sinister believed would work against his goals. Sinister would keep Nate's existence secret[4]. Nate ultimately be placed in the slave pens, allowing Sinister to hide him in plain sight. Nate would eventually be secretly freed by Cyclops[5].

Mister Sinister

Also at sometime in the past Sinister would take into his possession Kirika, the daughter of Weapon X and Mariko Yashida[6].

Aggressions between Apocalypse and the surviving humans would lead to a cold war where nuclear Armageddon could happen any day. The Kelly Pact, promising to put an end of of genetic culling in America, however Apocalypse had no intentions of following it. Finally realizing that Apocalypse had gone to far, Sinister would begin his plans to over throw him[7]. After detonating his labs and destroying his work[2] Sinister would disguise himself (calling himself Essex) and track down Nate, who was then a member of Forge's Outcasts[5].

"Essex" would encourage Nate to use his powers, and convince the Outcasts to attack and destroy one of Apocalypse's processing factories. Later, the Outcast known as Brute would remember Sinister as the man who experimented on him leaving him mentally challenged, forcing Sinister to slay him[8]. Forge, growing tire of Essex's influence on Nate, would confront him. They would be attacked by Domino and her assassins who come to either recruit or eliminate Nate. Domino and her forces would slay most of Forge's followers before being slain themselves. Forge would confront Sinister once more, and be slain once again[9]. Furious that Essex was slain by Sinister, Nate would confront him and learn of his true purpose. In a battle against Nate, Sinister would seemingly be killed. Nate would then go on to Apocalypse's citadel to attempt to slay him[10].

Sinister would survive however, and collect the seemingly dead Jean Grey and utilize her connection to the Phoenix Force to save the world from annihilation. When Magneto would be credited for saving the planet, Sinister would confront Magneto and reveal the truth. With Magneto now the head of the Department of Mutant Affairs, Sinister would blackmail him to stay away even though that Sinister was wanted for war crimes[11].

Magneto and the X-Men would attempt to hunt down Sinister, unaware that their leader was secretly avoiding this outcome. The truth would not come out until Paige Gurthrie, and X-Man abandoned by her mentors during a mission[12] would attempt to get revenge on the X-Men. Her dying words would be exposing Magneto's duplicity[13]. After explaining the situation to his X-Men, Magneto and the others would find Sinister hidden on Liberty Island. He would face the X-Men with his minions the Sinister Six, which included Jean Grey in their numbers[14].

In the final battle, Jean would break free from Sinisters control and bombard him with Phoenix Force energy, heavily charring his body. Sinister would then be impaled by both Weapon X and Kirika, seemingly slaying him[15].
