Marvel Database
We would love to hear what you think! Also, you can rate the skin from 1 - 10, on our forums.

I like the new look. Only a few minor thoughts (what would it be if I couldn't disagree with SOMETHING ;)

  1. Wolverine shifted left away from the ads.
  2. Link to the DCDP from the navbars on the left?!?
  3. Ability to move the page-screen left or right of th navbars...this is a wish ;)

Other than that I think you've outdone yourself with this one! --M1shawhan 03:38, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

DUDE!!! Wait...I think I can edit a couple of those items myself!!! Woohoo!! --M1shawhan 03:43, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
  1. I noticed that too. :( I think he looks fine where he is... I was thinking about moving the ads to the left a smidgen. We will have to think about that one for a bit...
  2. The DCDP link is under 'Community'. Is that too 'hidden'? (I may move it, if you think so...)
  3. Already logged as a feature request... we'll see if that ability comes around. Might be a year or so, no lie.
--Jamie 04:29, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
WOW!!! I am really liking the option to adjust your sidebar...I made an easier link direct to the Main Page. Looks like everyone can adjust their own sidebars and you can link it...well pretty much to anything you want it to!!! Sweet!
As far as the Wolverine...yeah, I like where he is at too - definitely move the ads (if that is possible) --M1shawhan 04:52, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Is it just me or is there a color issue with the Gaming Monaco skin and the news? I get white background with white text (though a SLIGHTLY different color of white). Don't know if this just the settings on my browser, I'm not waiting long enough for the page to fully load, or what. Also get a weird...issue with the light blue color on the main page and the white behind it. Other than that, my only issue with ANY of the new skins is that you only get the "Go" button, and not the "Search" as well. All complaints aside, though, the Monaco skin seems like a lot of fun. Just got to find the specific one that fits me. -- GrnMarvl14 03:56, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Do you have any screenshots?
If so, upload them to the database here and post a link here so I can investigate for you...
As for the 'go' vs. 'search': I completely agree. I like both buttons.
There WAS a magical type-ahead search where you would type 3 letters and it would pop up the first 5 pages that began with those letters. (Dynamic, while you are still typing)
I am not sure what happened to that. :(
--Jamie 04:29, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
Search suggest will be there shortly.
I'd be *very* interested to see a page that has a white bkd and almost white text. We would try to fix that immediately... please post links/your os/your browser (and version)/screenshot/etc. Very interested.

The main page using the Gaming Monaco skin (maybe it's just me that finds that particular shade of blue disturbing on the white, or maybe it's just on my computer) and a news story, featuring white on white (you can ALMOST make out the words). I'm using Windows XP and Opera 9.26 (which I'm thinking, if it's a problem on my end, is where the problem lies).
GrnMarvl14 21:10, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
I think you may need to check the See custom wikis (recommended) checkbox in your skin preferences. I think you have it set to the 'Gaming' skin. (I was able to reproduce your screenshot on my PC)
I don't think Opera is the problem in this case, but I could be wrong.
As for me, I get THIS fun behaviour on WinXP64 with IE7.
--Jamie 00:21, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
Ahh, yeah, using the custom skin makes it much better. Gives me the darker sidebar like I liked with the Gaming skin, but none of the weird text color issues. Thanks.
--GrnMarvl14 18:16, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
I'm automatically getting the Monobook skin (Wikipedia default) when I'm viewing diffs between edits, while otherwise, I have the standard skin. Kinda disturbing, but nothing that I can't survive. The Clever Guy Talk 16:40, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
I think this is probably a cache issue. Clear your browser cache and wait 48 hours.
It will probably fix itself. (If not, let me know. :)
--Jamie 18:52, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
Actually, I think this might not be a cache issue... I will have Wikia look into it.
--Jamie 00:28, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

I really like the skin. Over on the Half-Life wiki that I'm the 'crat on, we'd discussed keeping the default Monobook, but I'm really, really digging your new skin. Is there any way we could adapt parts of it for our site? EVula // talk // 19:40, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

You can adapt it, sure!
Go here to see your site in the slate monaco skin, and go here to see how to customize it.
--Jamie 23:00, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

I liked it so much myself that I immediately adopted it at Joepedia. I saw the new Monaco skin and interface and thought it's like the merging of Monobook and Quartz. For the life of me, I still can't remember how I ended up at Inside Wikia. It must be fate!!! --Destron Commander 10:26, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Good work! I think we should loose the wolverine photo. It's not visible because of the commercials. Copycat989 05:26, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Or, maybe the commercials can be moved down, and the Wolverine pic could be replaced by Spider-Man, who I think is more iconic for Marvel. The Clever Guy Talk 16:36, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
Spider-Man is more iconic, but maybe we'll put him on the next skin we make. That way people have multiple choices. :)
--Jamie 18:52, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Random image

Hmm, would it be possible to make it a random file? ie, link to a random text "script" from the MediaWiki file that outputs varying background-image values. EVula // talk // 19:31, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Oooo! I like that idea!!
--Jamie 22:54, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
That would be VERY cool...have a rotating picture every hour or so...Wolverine -> Spider-Man -> Fantastic Four group photo or something. Very neat idea and would cover all the "monotonous" issues with having a strict picture. --M1shawhan 00:07, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
Actually, I was thinking maybe it would change with every load; that might be a bit more doable than a "it changes every hour". However, I've never tried to do anything like that; I'm not sure if MediaWiki CSS pages will process transcluded pages. EVula // talk // 02:59, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
Although it would be really cool to have it change every load or hour, it would probably be more practical to change it only every day.
Every time we change something on a given page, it invalidates that page in the cache and it must be reloaded from the database.
This would be a significant performance hit and would slow our site to a crawl.
We couldn't do all that for changing pictures unfortunately. :(
Still a cool idea though!
--Jamie 15:15, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
What about bypassing the cache and linking directly to a PHP file? The ever-helpful A List Apart has an article[1] with a fairly simple PHP random image script; in theory, all you'd have to do is link to the direct PHP file in MediaWiki:Monaco.css, rather than Monaco accent2.jpg.
I'm not sure of the performance benefits/hit from doing it like that, nor do I know if Wikia will even process PHP files like that. Plus, the example has the script being called directly from the HTML, rather than through a style sheet (dunno the feasibility of tweaking the actual monaco template); I did find a CSS-based example using the ALA script, though.[2]
Sorry if I can't seem to let this idea go, it's just that it's too cool an idea to just shrug and give up on. :) EVula // talk // 15:45, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Don't forget that you can edit your VERY own sidebar (dark-patch) on the right. From the looks of it you can make it however you would like. See: User:M1shawhan/Monaco-sidebar for an idea on how to create your own and [3] for some other info! Do it now! :) --M1shawhan 00:07, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Wrong URL

I was just visiting the DC Database and I saw an error in the CSS code, the location of shadow.png is "", not "". Tcrow777 Talk | Teklogs 21:50, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Advertisment why is it there

Awsome Skin but why is there a Advertisment over Wolverine and Superman on the DC page why isn't somewere else.

From Rod12

I agree and must be whiny: "But DC doesn't have the ads over Superman! Why do we have to have ads over Wolverine?"
Plus, I also think we should be able to individually decide where the page edit box shows up. (I personally like the middle. :)
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 14:51, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
But there IS advertising over Superman...not that I like it, but it makes the situation a little more fair. The Clever Guy Talk 15:01, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

I can no longer read the page.

Okay I am sure this looks very cool on a windows computer however on my Linux FireFox Machine this page has become officially unreadable. the Menu hangs over the main area of the page making is so that Fire Fox users have to cut information out of the pages in order to actually read them.

Can those of us who cannot see the page due to the skin please get a different option I really like the page I use it a lot and I would hate never to be able to use it again.

I believe that the skin is the default only and you should still be able to make adjustments to it to revert if needed to another skin. The way to do this would be to goto Special:Preferences and make the change to your own. You might also want to supply a screenshot of the "error" so that a fix can be found or at least looked for so that you can enjoy the same things you are reading. I would try one thing though. From the sound of it, it may have changed your size of your screen when it defaulted to the new skin...if you have a mouse with a scroll wheel, try holding down your "ctrl" button on your keyboard, while scrolling up/down with the mouse scroll button. This will change your "view" (not sure if this is exactly what you are seeing though without a screenshot). --M1shawhan 05:47, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
There was an issue with positioning that would show up on some browsers but I think that was fixed. Can you please check again? Thanks. Johnq (talk) 08:21, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
As well, if you could upload a screenshot, that would be mighty helpful! :)
--Jamie 14:18, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Oh My Goodness It works Now thanks a Bunch. Looks Awesome.

Quick Question

Alright, I will admit that I'm a bit new at this, but, as much as I love Monaco I have problems seeing it on my screen, I was wondering if there was a way to change it back to one of the Quartz screens, Gaming works pretty well, so that I could read the text. I've tried to change it in preferences, and I've tried reloading it, but it just doesn't change. Maybe someone else could come up with how to do it, because I'm out of ideas.

Thanks KamariaMalika 12:15, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

Under the skin tab in your preferences, uncheck the "See custom wiki skins" box. That will allow you to override the skin for sites (though it's a global change across all of wikia, which is mildly unfortunate; there are some that I'd like to see in Monobook, and others I prefer Monaco on).
