History

Origins[]

Like each of the Fear Lords, Nox was a mystery, and her origin (or even her very existence) was known to few.[5][6] Nox was considered the most mysterious of the Fear Lords by the Dweller-in-Darkness, as few in all the Multiverse had even heard of her.[7] Nox's true origins are unknown and are subject to contradictory accounts.

She was believed to be Nyx,[8] the Olympian goddess of the night,[3] of the ancient Greek myths. Nyx was possibly her true name.[1][2]

Some sources consequently stated she was an Olympian goddess,[3][6] the daughter of Ophion and the sea nymph Eurynome,[2] who later degenerated into a demon,[6] becoming a "demonic fear lord".[9] Another mentions her origin being unknown but states she actually predates the Olympians,[5][1] and was an extradimensional sorceress.[1]

Early years[]

Posing as Aphrodite, she mated with Ares and conceived two sons whom she named Phobos ("fear") and Deimos ("terror").[1] She also sired numerous offspring with Cerberus.[10]

1930s[]

In the 1930s, she allied herself with the General in an effort to gain power,[11] leading him to the Amulet of Achilles[12] and forcing him to make human sacrifices to sustain his own life, and occasionally enabling her to enter the mortal realm by inhabiting their corpses.[11] Following the General's sacrifice of the town of Dark Hollow, West Virginia, she was finally able to fully appear on Earth, helping him carry out their plans.[13] ...[10][14]

Modern Days[]

Nox introduced the Microverse scientist Psycho-Man to the study of fear. She also guided Thog in his scheme regarding Nightmare Boxes.[7][1]

[15]

Nox later met with the other Fear Lords to discuss the Serpent's attempted conquest of Earth,[16] and the group was gathered again by Kid Loki to stop Nightmare from becoming the King of Fear by forging the Serpent's fear into a crown and usurping all the other Lords. To this end they were tricked into a stalemate where none could possess the crown without it being taken by another.[17] This seemingly lasted until Mephisto claimed the crown for himself and the Fear Lords bent to his will, feeding off the fear Mephisto gave them from the crown. It is presumed that when Kid Loki sacrificed himself the crown faded and the Fear Lords left Mephisto's service.[18]
