That's right! I like to care for him, and he likes to protect me. What's wrong with that? Why don't you join in too, instead of fighting! Maybe we're more alike than you think!

Number Nine[source]

History

Number Nine was originally an unknown woman who agreed to be genetically modified by Skip Ash to enhance her appearance, presumably not realizing he intended to also alter her personality and replace her memories with a false identity.

The research facility where she was being modified was attacked by Skip's daughter, Brandy, who wished to disrupt his unethical experiments on animals, and Number Nine was inadvertently released.[2]

She was found by Daredevil and aided him and Brandy in subduing Skip, despite her confusion about her own identity and purpose.[3] She briefly encountered Ultron, who saw her ability to rapidly heal as proof she was a perfect, indestructible woman. Number Nine rejected that identity, but nonetheless was touched by Ultron's interest in her.[4]

After meeting the Inhumans, who were looking for Black Bolt's missing child, Nine latched onto Gorgon, and left with him on his search.[5] She was briefly trapped in Hell as part of one of Mephisto's schemes, and after escaping chose to set off on her own to try and find her own purpose in life.[6]
