History

Obadiah Stane was an old friend, business partner of Howard Stark, and co-founder of Stane/Stark Industries. Their joint company was the umbrella corporation that controlled the geopolitical region known as the North American Union, one of the seven sovereign bodies whose combined power governed the entire world. Since Howard had no interest in politics and shunned the spotlight altogether, Obadiah acted as the public face of Stane/Stark Industries and the sole representative of the two in a secret council comprised of the leaders of the seven nation-states.

This cabal orchestrated the conflicts and alliances between their territories to unite their populations. Under the leadership of the world's imperator, the Maker, the council operated on the shared belief that genuine lasting peace was unachievable. Stane would frequently offer Howard to let him in on the truth, but Stark remained purposefully ignorant due to his reserved nature.[2] Howard would eventually agree to participate in a convergence of the world leaders in Latveria, the home of the Maker. This gathering was disrupted by an army of super-soldiers sent from the future by the Maker's adversary, the time-traveling warrior Kang. Obadiah suited up in a battlesuit to engage the attackers, but his armor was critically breached during the skirmish, and it exploded.[2]
