Okkara was a sentient island in the South Pacific that began its life as Thresholder mutant Grove.[1][5] The Twilight Sword of Amenth split Okkara into two beings, Krakoa and Arakko.[4]
History

Grove
Grove was a member of Threshold, a thriving society of the first generation of mutants that existed two billion years ago. Calling themselves the "Enriched", the Thresholders were attacked by the Unbreathing, an anaerobic form of life to whom oxygen was deadly. To combat the Unbreathing the Thresholders engineered sentient bacteria Arkea and Sublime, but they went out of control and turned upon Threshold, infecting their bodies to use as hosts.[6] Meanwhile, Commander Nightfount defected from Threshold to the Unbreathing. Facing total extermination, Grove hand-picked Three Thresholders who could ensure the survival of their society in the future: Theia, Amass, and Crave.[7]
After their departure, Grove managed to create a refuge for the survivors called the Helix Home, protected by holographic illusions. However, with Arkea and Sublime infecting the birthing sea where no new generation of Thresholder could be born and extinction seemed imminent. Against all hope, the Threshold Three were caught in the far future and returned to their time with the team of Marauders led by Captain Kate Pryde. Some of their number were killed and others were lost to the Unbreathing, but the rest eventually found their way to the Helix Home. A daring plan to combat the sentient bacteria was formed,[7] but despite the best effort of Lucas Bishop it was not enough. The day was saved when Cassandra Nova allowed both bacteria to enter her body willingly and then used that connection to lobotomize each one of their trillions of spread out cells. Grove was gravely injured in battle but survived through their mutant gift, changing from an almost human form with small sprouts into a fully bark-covered form. The Thresholders were free to continue their fight against the Unbreathing, while the Marauders returned to their own time, leaving Cassandra behind as punishment for her crimes. Having much changed, Grove took on the new name of Okkara.

Grove becomes Okkara
Threshold eventually fell, but Okkara survived. Even as other life of the planet evolved, Okkara continued to change and grow, eventually reaching the size of an island free-floating in the world ocean. When a million years ago the First Host of Celestials arrived, they used Okkara as the template for the Machine that is Earth.[8]
Okkara eventually became a home for the second generations of mutants on Earth, with Isca being the first known to be born on the island 10,000 years.[9] Apocalypse and his wife Genesis would one day lead it's thriving society. Millennia prior to the Modern Age,[3] it was attacked by an enemy wielding the Twilight Sword, causing a horde of Daemons to spill forth unto Okkara, and splitting it into two beings; Krakoa and Arakko. Apocalypse and his First Horsemen fought a bloody war against the daemons. When it became clear that they could not win, Apocalypse sealed the breach, with Genesis, the First Horsemen and the other mutants of Okkara remaining on Arakko, which became trapped in the dimension of Amenth.[4]
