Synopsis for "Chapter Three: The Devil We Know"

The Avengers and the Masters of Evil established a temporary and tenuous alliance against Emperor Doom. The Masters agreed to this alliance as they too cannot tolerate living in a world under Doom's rule. Carol Danvers sees the Masters as "wildcards" who are best at causing enough chaos to ruin Doom's plans in which she wants them to be used as a distraction for the Sorcerer Supreme. Iron Man and Danvers explains that the Avengers and Masters will battle Doom to keep him occupied while the Scarlet Witch, Baron Mordo and Madelyn Pryor will use their magic and telepathy to enter the minds of the world leaders to find out how Doom was able to earn their support, and therefore cut off his source of power, support and legitimacy.

The teams begin their operation as they arrive at the Latverian border where they attract Doom's attention in which he also brings along his dinosaur counterpart to battle. As the battle rages, the sorcerers/telepaths proceed to enter the mindscape of the world leaders. Within a heartbeat, they realized how Doom achieved world domination.

It is revealed that Doom never resorted to force or his magic to coerce the world leaders to follow his whims. Instead he negotiated with them to support his rule. Ever since the vampire invasion, the general public was left reeling from the aftermath as many were left in a sense of insecurity and weariness over having to deal with constant extraordinary threats that affected their daily lives, and especially from those directly and indirectly caused by supervillains and superheroes. Doom, using his power as Sorcerer Supreme to be in many places at once, appealed to the world leaders by promising them a better order in exchange for offering them whatever they need to secure their support such as wealth, security, and better health.

After everyone learns the truth, Doom then informs the Avengers and Masters that he does not want to fight them as he wants to warn them that there is a massive prison break at the Raft where the imprisoned supervillains are escaping. So he offers them a chance to fight alongside him to stop the escaping prisoners. Danvers is quick to accuse Doom of planning the breakout to make the heroes and villains to support him in the eyes of the public. Despite their refusals, Doom teleports them to the Raft where they engage and capture the prisoners.

Thereafter the news praised the Avengers and Masters for their actions, but criticized them for their "extrajudicial" attack on Doom and thereby allowing the Raft prisoners to launch their near escape. Despite this, Doom publicly claimed that he did not hold against his attackers but instead they had realized the errors of their ways and he thanked them for their service to the world and to Doom.

Meanwhile, the Lord of Chaos Dormammu observes Doom's handling in earthly affairs and he mocks the new Sorcerer Supreme for wasting his powers on what he deems as "weakness". Dormammu then comes to the realization that Doom is neglecting his responsibilities as Earth's Sorcerer Supreme, and therefore the spells (which must be maintained by the Sorcerer Supreme) that protect and secure Earth from the Dark Dimension are weakening. Seeing an opportunity, Dormammu begins his plans to claim Earth and along with the rest of the Eighth Cosmos.
