Let the Onslaught begin.

Onslaught[source]

Unlike Onslaught of Earth-616, this Onslaught was created by Magneto and Jean Grey instead of Magneto and Charles Xavier.

History

On Earth-696, Magneto decided to wage war on the X-Men and Avengers and killed Charles Xavier. In a moment of panic and anger, Jean Grey's latent abilities, which were suppressed by Xavier, reemerged and she shut down Magneto's mind, however, this led to the creation of Onslaught, a psionic entity made of the two mutants' worst sides. Onslaught possessed Jean and posed as the Phoenix Force, which never came close to Earth, and rallied the X-Men through a progressive mental manipulation into enforcing a brutal stance on the fight for mutantkind, with the secret objective of acquiring more power to ascend into a Cosmic Being by draining the minds of humanity.[1]

However, the Phoenix of another reality noticed Onslaught's threat and summoned the original X-Men of Earth-616 to stop it, they brought the local X-Men back to their senses and fought Onslaught, who immediately started draining humanity's minds, however, Marvel Girl united every mind across the world, intending to stop Onslaught even if it meant the end of the world, but at the last minute, Jean-696 regained her senses and contacted the Phoenix to bring back the young X-Men to their reality, sacrificing herself, the X-Men and the world to stop Onslaught.[1]

This didn't result in Onslaught's death however, as he survived, although greatly weakened. He escaped into the Multiverse and set his sight on Earth-93068, a world where Magneto and Jean Grey were both great leaders in harmony with one another. The Phoenix sent a team of Wolverines after him, but Onslaught avoided immediate detection by hiding in multiple minds instead of a single one. He was eventually discovered, but by this time Onslaught had already infected countless humans and superhumans alike. The Wolverines held ground long for 1 billion uninfected to be evacuated off-world through the Nexus of All Realities, leading to Earth and the infected to be destroyed by the Phoenix. Onslaught then targeted the Phoenix's Earth-80777.[2]

Recruiting the support of the Sorcerer Supreme Illyana Rasputina, Phoenix and the Wolverines tracked Onslaught to the Savage Land, but stepped into a trap, and Illyana was incapacitated. Realizing that Onslaught was targeting her family, Jean rushed home, where she suspected that Onslaught was hiding inside Madelyne Pryor, but it was Maddy's son Nathaniel who was actually possessed and Onslaught managed to get a hold of Jean. He started absorbing Jean's Phoenix power but was stopped when Earth-X Wolverine sliced off Nathaniel's arm, prompting Onslaught to flee once again.[3]

Onslaught next came to Earth-31974 to realize the dream of his foundational persona Magneto and Jean Grey: make all mutants immortal, so that they could inherit the Earth. He performed a spell using the Lifeline Tablet, but the Tablet was seized and the spell went wrong, turning every human and mutant immortal but not invulnerable nor immune to pain. The pain of those who were suffering but could not die had crippled and debilitated Onslaught, who reached out to the Wolverines for help, knowing they would not leave an innocent world to endless suffer. Jane Howlett proposed a deal: they would only help if Onslaught promised to never interfere with any of their home world, including Phoenix's, and Onslaught accepted. He gave thema fragment of the Lifeline Tablet, which the Wolverines tracked to the Bloodstone Manor. Jane Howlett smashed the Tablet and broke the spell, restoring Earth-31974 to normal. Onslaught made a secret offer to Old Man Logan: remove the others from his path in exchange to being taken back in time to before he had killed all of his friends.[4]

Onslaught benevolent

On yet another Earth, Old Man Logan had incapacitated his teammates and send a mental distress call to the Phoenix. She arrived to back up her team, only to be literally stabbed in the back. Onslaught gave the wounded Jean an Ultimatum: surrender her Phoenix Force willingly, or he would have to destroy the world they stood on to rip it away from her. Backed into a corner, Jean accepted and passed the Phoenix Force she spend decades saving lives with over. This had an instant effect on Onslaught, negating the pain of his Jean Grey and Magneto and helping him realize the horrors of what he was doing. Old Man Logan confirmed that this was his plan all along, seeing as there was no way for them to beat Onslaught in direct confrontation. Jean-80777 commended him on his choice and said goodbye to her Phoenix Force, who departed with Onslaught to explore the Multiverse.[5]
