Never! We will not allow our god to be taken from us! The Oracle is the most holy of beings! His is the enlightened vision by which we live our lives! Such ancient wisdom must not fall into the hands of unbelievers! We defend him to death, as does his guardian!

—One of the Oracle's monk worshippers[1]

History

The Oracle of Ancient Knowledge was a robot[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] from a long-dead,[1][3] forgotten[3] civilization[1][3] in an alternate timeline,[2] having been designed and constructed to store vast amounts of informations[1][3] It also had defensive capacities in the form of short-range electric attacks.[1] Arriving to Earth-616[2] very long ago by means unrevealed,[10][11] the Oracle came to be worshipped by a monastic order[10][1] on the planet H'aarg,[10][1][12][13][2][7][8][9][11] who valued its immeasurable knowledge and insight,[1] and considered it to be one of the oldest beings in the universe.[10][11] The Oracle was kept in a Monastery,[1] giving periodic audiences to its monks.[10] In its appearances, the Oracle was typically robed and hooded and, as it was an android, its robotic nature was not evident. Still, the Oracle had to be connected to a power source via wires.[1] To ensure the Oracle's safety, the fanatic monks[1] had arranged a security system around it,[10][7][8][9] including a protective planetary shield that required intruders to use baffler-equipped starships to enter the planet undetected.[10] a huge robotic guard that had purportedly never been overpowered, and the monks themselves were willing to fight to death for their Oracle. Apparently there were no stardocks or starflight facilities on H'aarg, possibly to avoid visitors except those who joined the order so as to never leave. The Oracle began to develop delusions of godhood due to this.[1]

Thanos learned of the Oracle[3] when he was seeking knowledge to protect Death from the Walker and coveted the Oracle's information.[2] Deciding he had neither the time nor the interest to bypass the defenses on H'aarg himself, he instead recruited a team for that purpose:[10] Geatar, whom he resurrected[2] or cloned[3] as well as Nitro, Rhino, the Super-Skrull, and the Titanium Man[10][14][2][3][12][13][15][16] as his "secret defenders"[12][13] (He discarded Annihilus, Darkseid, Juggernaut, Ultron, Deathbird and Venom, after consideration).[10] To convince them to accept such a quest of stealing the Oracle[10][12][13][14][16][4][5][6] Thanos lied[1] claiming that the order had riches that they could keep,[10][12][13] as well as scientific knowledge that would tempt the Titanium Man,[10] and that the Oracle was preparing for an inter-galactic holy war[10][14][16] that would affect negatively both Thanos' interests and those of the Skrull Empire.[1] Thanos convinced Geatar by accepting not to go after Nebula, whom Geatar loved.[10] Planning on betraying the defenders[1] once they had overcame the Oracle's defenses,[1][7][8][9] Thanos gave them a baffler-equipped ship to reach the planet undetected,[10] but he had sabotaged the vehicle so that it would explode shortly after arrival.[1]

The defenders indeed reached H'raag and bursted onto the Monastery by breaking a wall (and killing one of the monks, Kamrik under the debrigs), but another monk immediately notified a higher authority.[10] Immediately the monks attacked the intruders, making use of superior numbers and sacrificing their lives. The defenders managed to reach the Oracle's sanctum, where they defeated the guardian robot (thou the robot managed to injure Nitro). When they found the Oracle and Geatar tried to grab him, they found out the Oracle was a robot, to their surprise. The Oracle used its electric attacks[1] to severely injure Nitro,[1][7][8] but Rhino broke the wires connecting it to the power source, while Geatar threatened it with a gun.[1] Once they had succeeded in their mission,[1][7][8][14][16] Thanos safely teleported into the Sanctum, admitted he had lied to the defenders, and explained how they were stranded. After saying his goodbye,[1] Thanos teleported away with the Oracle.[1][12][13][9] Although abandoned by Thanos,[1][12][13][3][7][8][14][16][4][11][15][9] he defenders then resourcefully escaped H'raag.[17]

Thanos used his advanced machinery[2] to extract the Oracle's knowledge, and he thus learned of Tyrant, a rogue creation of Galactus, which led him to recruit Terrax and Ganymede to assault Tyrant, and in that fight obtain one of the power Tyrant's works, from which he gained extraordinary knowledge.[18][19] The Oracle's fate after its encounter with Thanos is yet to be revealed.
