Pablo was the nephew of Ernesto Mendez, an inventor who invented an engine valve that would save fuel and reduce pollution. Pablo advised his uncle to sell the valve design to Mr. Markham of the Markham Machine Company who would have paid a fortune, but his uncle replied piquedly that his invention was for the whole world. Markham later had Ernesto beaten to death and kidnapped Pablo to appropriate the find. On his deathbed, Ernesto begged Eddie Brock to save his nephew Pablo.[1] When Eddie went to Markham's factory to rescue Pablo, he didn't find him prisoner but free and armed thinking that Pablo had broken free, but suddenly Pablo shot Venom and yelling at Markham's men that Venom was there.[2]
Venom initially felt betrayed, but after successfully escaping the trap of molten metal, he was able to pull Pablo aside. Pablo told him that he knew his uncle was angry with him for giving Markham the blueprint of his invention but that he would calm down once he showed him the money Markham had given him. At that point Venom told Pablo that his uncle had been killed by Markham's men on his orders, than Pablo fell into deep despair blaming his uncle's death on himself.[3]
