History
Pei was a young monk of K'un-Lun who was very intrigued by the egg of the last incarnation of Shou-Lao. One day, after being caught by Sparrow trying to sneak in the chambers to see it, the two were attacked by Davos during a coup. Sparrow told her to run while she fought Davos and his army alone, and Pei obeyed, escaping to New York[3] with the egg on her back.[4]
Pei got hit several times, but managed to find the Iron Fist and tell him to go back to K'un-Lun.[5] Danny left, but Brenda Swanson looked after Pei and got her to the Hospital. Not long afterwards, though, Davos arrived to get the egg back. Pei and Brenda tried to escape, but a Spider-like creature caught up with them. Not scared and willing to do anything to protect K'un Lun's legacy, Pei meant to face the creature, but Brenda attacked it instead, while Pei ran once more. She managed to lose her pursuers; unfortunately, she dropped the egg, cracking it and making the dragon hatch.[6]
She was initially afraid of it and ran away, but when the dragon jumped at her and started licking her face, she realized it meant her no harm and nicknamed it "Gork", due to the sound it made. At that moment, Davos finally caught up with them and told her to kneel.[7]
After Davos and The One used Rand Tower to open portals between realms, Zhu-Rong was summoned and defeated the One. Davos, realizing things weren't going as planned, ordered the evacuation of his people. Hoever, Pei told him they weren't his people and that they were done running. Angry with their uprising, Davos killed "Gork", but Pei gained the power of the Iron Fist and punched Davos through a wall.[8]
As the youngest person to ever bear the mark of the Iron Fist, Pei revived Gork and all 66 previous incarnations of Shou-Lao, but Danny and his best friend Luke Cage dealt with it.[9][10] From that point, she started training with Danny and was enrolled in High School.[10]
Pei also started being tutored by Madame Yeoh,[10] but she revealed herself to be one of the daughters of Mara and attacked her school dance. After this, Mara manifested through Pei's friend Jayce Paz and removed Danny's heart. Pei imbued Danny with her chi, giving him the strength to defeat Mara and banish him to another realm, but he managed to grab Pei and Jayce and send them to a dimension of gladiatorial combat.[11]
There, Pei encountered Brenda Swanson, Danny's villainous ex-girlfriend, along with a furious Shou-Lao. When she had almost given up hope, Pei remembered Danny's teaching and summoned her fist, allowing her to punch through the dragon's chest. Because she already had the mark of the Iron Fist and by her putting the dragon's heart in its place, Danny was able to bring her, Jayce, and Brenda to their realm in that moment.[12]
When the Hierophant and Brenda, now going by Yama Dragonsbane, began slaying the dragons of the Heavenly Cities to acquire their hearts, Pei and Gork joined Danny, Luke Cage and the Immortal Weapons to save the dragons. The heroes traveled with Okoye to the Eighth City to destroy the Hierophant's undead army, but were attacked by the Ghost Dragon. When the Ghost Dragon proved impossible to kill, Pei reluctantly allowed Okoye to sacrifice Gork to augment the dragon chi she acquired from Hidden Dragon and Spider Dragon. With Gork's death, Pei transferred her Iron Fist powers to Okoye, giving her the strength to slay the Ghost Dragon and take its heart. Danny also gave his Iron Fist powers to Okoye to defeat the dragon chi empowered Hierophant. After the Hierophant was killed and the hearts of the slain dragons were released, the Iron Fist remained with Okoye. Despite Danny naming her as his successor, Okoye refused the title and returned the Iron Fist to Gork's resurrected egg.[13]
Pei was threatened with expulsion from school after getting into a fight with a bully who attempted to steal her artifact from K'un-Lun. Since Danny was away on a last-minute business trip overseas, Luke stepped in and convinced the headmistress to downgrade Pei's punishment to a week's suspension by having her complete community service by working at his friend Winston's record shop in Crown Heights.[14] After work, Pei befriended Winston's neighbor Han and helped him clean up after several hoodlums defaced his grocery store with racist grafitti.[15] The next day, the same bully from Pei's school visited the grocery store with his goons and confronted Han on Pei's whereabouts.[16] Pei beat up the bully and his henchmen while empowered by her artifact. Luke and Jessica Jones inquired Pei on her injuries when she arrived at their apartment. When Pei explained everything, Luke and Jessica realized the men she described were part of a dangerous gang.[17] Pei ignored Luke's warning to stay away from the area and went to check up on Winston the next day, and discovered that the gangsters had badly beaten him and ransacked his shop in retaliation. The shop was then set on fire by a Molotov cocktail and Pei used her artifact to create a path through the flames and debris but got separated from it while carrying Winston outside. She found the gang outside waiting for her along with their leader, revealed to be the bully's father.[18] Having regained her confidence, Pei easily defeated the gangsters with the power of the medallion.[19]
Pei encountered Danny's successor and the newest Iron Fist, Lin Lie, when he was attacked by the Shocker. Despite her dislike of him, Pei readily came to Lie's aid against Shocker, who refused to take Pei seriously as a threat due to her being a child. Lie reassured Pei that despite no longer possessing Shou-Lou's power, the dragon still chose her to be his champion and that she was an Iron Fist for life, which softened her stance about Lie. Pei and Lie combined their powers together to defeat Shocker. Unbeknownst to both, the Shocker was hired by a Ch'i-Lin possessing Razor Fist to keep Pei and Lie distracted while it attacked Danny on his 34th birthday. The Ch'i-Lin revealed this plan to Danny and threatened to kill Pei and Lie after he was done with him before it succeeded in killing Danny.[20]Attributes
