Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man is the name of the third ongoing comic series published by Marvel chronicling the life of Spider-Man. It ran alongside the two other ongoing series of Spider-Man at the time: Amazing Spider-Man and Marvel Team-Up. Spectacular was launched over five years after Marvel Team-Up began and capitalized on the fact that Spider-Man was Marvel's most popular character.[1]

At its inception, Spectacular Spider-Man was planned to be a book that complemented the other two Spider-Man titles of the time in which the writers of the three books would coordinate the life of the hero to tell a continuous, overlapping story that weaved characters and sub-plots between the different books in one, continuous narrative in a way which no Marvel comic had attempted before. Spectacular Spider-Man was planned to have tight continuity with the other titles (particularly Amazing Spider-Man) and would focus more heavily on Spider-Man's supporting cast and Peter's civilian life than the other two titles.[1] In reality, Marvel struggled to find a consistent writer for the book until issue #9, beginning the run of Bill Mantlo, and the focus on Peter's civilian life and supporting cast did not transpire as planned,[2] with entire issues being written without Spider-Man ever taking off his costume to show his life as Peter Parker.[3][4][5] The writers of the three Spider-Man books did convene to coordinate the plot of Spider-Man's life months in advance,[6] but by the time of issue #34 a new arrangement was decided upon to separate out the majority of supporting cast members into specific books and to have Spectacular Spider-Man focus on Peter's college life with its newly-introduced characters while Amazing Spider-Man focused on more traditional Spider-Man supporting characters.[7]
