History

The Jackal implanted a post-hypnotic command into Spider-Man to kill his wife and unborn daughter. He was intercepted by his clone, the Scarlet Spider, and their fight took them to the Consolidated Edison power plant. Unable to break free from his programing, Peter begged Ben to save his family. Seeing no other option, Ben caused an explosion within the plant, killing Peter.

Brother vs. Brother

Ben survived, but emergency services misidentified him as the genuine Peter Parker. Not having the heart to tell Mary Jane no wanting their daughter to group up without a father, Ben took Peter's place. In emergencies, Ben also operated as Spider-Man. This ruse lasted three years, until MJ figured out the truth after watching Ben use impact webbing to save a kidnapped May. The two went their separate ways, with Mary Jane telling Ben he owed it to himself to live his own life.
