Peter Parker's Uncle Ben was killed as the result of his actions, and Peter promised his Aunt May that he would do anything to bring him back. Unfortunately, "anything" ended up costing him the soul of Mary Jane Watson in exchange. Now desperate to bring her back in turn, Spider-Men ventured into Mephisto's Netherworld, where his own soul eventually became corrupted.
He as encountered by Ghost Rider who was on a similar quest to save the soul of a loved one, in his case his little brother Gabe. Ghost Rider used his Penance Stare on Peter, cleansing his soul, and Spider-Man decided to accompany Ghost Rider on his quests across the Netherworld. When they came upon General Ross and his Thunderbolts, they discovered that the Darkhold was causing a corrupting influence, and Clea attempted to restrain its corruption, but Ross saw this as an attempt to undermind his position and unleashed Darkhold's power to the full. The eldritch tome transformed Ross into a hellish version of a Red Hulk, but Spider-Man and Ghost Rider restrained him with their webs and chain. Reyes then used his Penance Stare on Hell Hulk, draining most of his power, while Clea took care of the Darkhold.
They came across Baron Mordo who revealed to them that Mephisto has been supplanted as the Ruler of Netherworld by a corrupted version of Doctor Strange that Clea came with. Mordo then attacked them, only to be ambushed by Mister Misery who absorbed Mordo into his body. Misery then ordered Spider-Man, Ghost Rider and others not to follow him before disappearing into a portal. Spider-Man and Ghost Rider attacked Misery, defeating it and reducing it to the size of a small blob, which they picked up.

They then confronted Satana, who offered to release the souls of both Gabe and MJ in exchange for that of their friend who wanted to dethrone Strange - her new boss. Although Spider-Man took the deal for real while Ghost Rider was only playing along, both attacked their companion, only for them to all turn on Satana when the soul contracts were knocked from her hands. Pressed by another version of Strange, Satana was forced to reveal that the contracts were fake and that only the original signee - in this case Mephisto himself - had the power to undo them and release the souls. This meant that Ghost Rider and Spider-Man had to go towards the Citadel of Sin. They were able to find the Eye of Agamotto that had rejected the corrupted Strange and Ghost Rider took it for himself.
Eventually, Clea and America Chavez helped them gain access to Mephisto's Citadel of Sin, where corrupted Doctor Strange now resided. After a battle with him Spider-Man force-fed Strange the remains of Mister Misery, restoring his soul, while Ghost Rider used the Eye of Agamotto to fully purge his corruption. Returned to normal, Strange panicked and tried to lock everyone else out of Mephistos Citadel. After they found their way back, they saw that Mephisto had returned from his brief imprisonment. Mocking Stephen, who once again lacked power to contend with him, Mephisto opened a portal from which a hellish thing grabbed Strange and took him away. Mephisto then attacked the others for fun, but after several hits from Ghost Rider's Chain settled down and opened to negotiation. Mephisto refused to let Strange out, as he had to be punished for his attempted coup. He did however agree to release the souls of Mary Jane Watson and Gabriel Reyes.
